Always, we are guided by a single purpose: As we drive towards curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.</p> <p>Breakthrough T1D, the world's leading nonprofit funder of Type 1 Diabetes research, seeks a Director, Research Business Development, to expand our industry partnerships portfolio.</p> <p>Breakthrough T1D's mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications. In order to achieve our mission, we need to collaborate and partner with key institutions and industry to enable the development of novel therapies. We serve as an accelerator, facilitator, convenor, and coordinator to bring diverse stakeholders in the ecosystem to work together to enable productization and commercialization. To that end, we need a business development expert that can think in and out of the box to enable and expedite collaborative partnerships with business terms that can benefit all parties.</p> <p>Partnerships with industry (pharma, biotech, and medtech) are essential to achieving our mission. The Director, Research Business Development, will play a vital role in shaping and scoping the opportunities to work across a matrixed team to expand Breakthrough T1D's industry partnership portfolio and to contract new opportunities. This individual will be responsible for synthesizing research team goals with business operations to accelerate research toward translation and product development.</p> <p>The ideal candidate will have direct, hands-on experience negotiating and successfully delivering industry partnership agreements. In addition, project management skills and participating in scientific research forums will be critical. The Director will scout, assess partnership opportunities, and negotiate new partnerships and collaborations. This individual must be able to work independently to achieve desired outcomes while collaborating with other Research staff and other departments.</p> <p>They will report to the AVP, Research Operations</p> <p>SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Lead the business development of new partnerships and collaborations, with a strong focus on those related to Project ACT. Work with VP of Research and scientific team to identify, assess, and negotiate industry partnerships aligned with Breakthrough T1D's strategic priorities. </li><li>Collaborate with internal and external legal counsel to negotiate a variety of tailored research project agreements (term sheets, definitive agreements, terms related to intellectual property, revenue sharing agreements, MOUs, and confidentiality agreements), working to close deals and achieve targets. </li><li>Collaborate with scientific program managers on developing and reviewing progress-based milestones for new partnerships and collaborations. </li><li>Oversee alliance management with active industry partners in biotech, medtech, and pharma. </li><li>Oversee active grants by monitoring contract compliance, addressing challenges as they arise through contract amendments or other solutions. </li><li>Join the Senior Manager, Partnerships and Alliances, on joint research advisory committee meetings governing ongoing active collaborations. </li><li>Ensure that commercialized assets resulting from Breakthrough T1D funding are handled according to contractual obligations, including licensing review, royalties, and related press releases. </li><li>Develop and oversee implementation and streamlining of policies and standard operating procedures related to Research Business Development, Partnerships, and Alliances, including coordinating across teams and departments as needed. </li><li>Track and analyze key metrics related to business development activities by providing regular updates and making data-driven recommendations to the Research Team and across the organization as appropriate. </li></ul> <p>EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree required, MBA or related graduate degree strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience in the research sciences will be considered. </li><li>5 or more years of direct experience in business development in a scientific research context. </li><li>A deal summary/deal sheet included as part of the application is preferred but not required. It will be requested if the candidate progresses in the recruitment process. </li><li>Direct experience in leading the design and negotiation of contracts and research agreements. </li><li>High facility with scientific and technical vocabulary required. Ability to quickly gain familiarity with concepts across a broad range of scientific disciplines. </li><li>Proven ability to work in a cross-functional team with a track record of delivering results. Facility in balancing competing priorities under pressure. </li><li>Ability to manage and resolve risks and conflicts internally and externally in a diplomatic and timely manner through great listening skills and the ability to ask the right questions. </li><li>Experience in the scientific fields of diabetes, regenerative medicine, and autoimmune diseases is highly preferred. </li><li>Hybrid presence at Breakthrough T1D's New York City office is required (2+ days a week) </li><li>Business travel, both domestically and internationally, as required. </li><li>A cover letter is required as part of the application. </li></ul> <p>Target Salary - $150k - $165k</p> <p>Essential Functions:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
