<p>Chief Deputy Coroner</p> <p>Employment Type: 0 - Full-time Regular</p> <p>Pay Range: $109,678.00 - 164,518.00</p> <p>Location: Castle Rock, CO</p> <p>Overtime Exempt: Y</p> <p>Elected Office / Department: CORONER</p> <p>Under direct authority of the elected Coroner, the Chief Deputy Coroner is responsible for overall leadership, supervision, and administration of day-to-day operations, investigations, and interagency collaboration required to fulfill the vision of the Coroner, mission of the office, and statutory responsibilities pertaining to the office. This position is instrumental in overseeing delivery of the highest level of service to the people, while maintaining the strictest fiscal oversight on behalf of the taxpayer.</p> <p>Generally, the hiring range is $XX-$XX annually. View the full Employee Benefits Guide</p> <p>View the full job description here</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)</p> <ul> <li> <p>Assumes full leadership, management, and responsibility of all day-to-day operations, investigations, fiscal oversight of investigations budget and required support functions necessary to meet the needs of the office. Reports to the Coroner on a regular basis with operational updates, case reviews, performance metrics and operational efficiency.</p> </li><li> <p>Hires, supervises, and manages medicolegal investigative staff, provides specialized and complex staff oversight specific to office policy and procedure. Creates schedules, assigns work, and oversees regular performance evaluations and reviews. Guides career development and manages personnel performance issues. Fosters and monitors high standards of individual and group organizational performance and efficiency.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborates with contracted pathologists, forensic specialists, and other medical professionals to ensure completion and delivery of the most thorough, accurate, and scientific medicolegal death investigation in accordance with state statute, national standards, and best practices. Determines and approves completeness of investigations.</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinates and directs all aspects of multiagency/interagency collaboration, communication, and cohesiveness.</p> </li><li> <p>Represents the Office on scenes within Incident Command Systems on conservative and high-profile cases. Participates in small and large-scale events and exercises and represents the Office at multiagency case reviews.</p> </li><li> <p>Consoles families by explaining various medicolegal investigation processes, understanding of events surrounding death, and comprehension of final ruling of cause and manner of death. Handles concerns regarding investigative processes.</p> </li><li> <p>In the absence or vacancy of the Coroner, must fulfill all statutory responsibilities and duties of the Coroner, providing continuity of leadership and management for the Office.</p> </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree in a related field. </li><li>At least five years of related experience (such as death/crime scene investigation, autopsy/surgical assisting, emergency medical services, law enforcement, nursing, or organ/tissue procurement) within the last ten years. </li><li>Three years' supervisory experience. </li><li>A combination of education and experience may be considered. </li></ul> <p>CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must obtain and maintain certifications from the Colorado Coroners Association as a Certified Death Investigator within one year and a D-ABMDI Medicolegal Death Investigator certification with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators within two years of employment. Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.</p> <p>ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:</p> <p>Closing Date: 12/19/2025 5:59PM MST. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.</p>
