Its robust curricular offerings support undergraduate majors in history and adolescence education in social studies as well as an online graduate master's degree in history. SUNY Cortland strives to attract faculty who can contribute to a campus that embraces diversity, practices inclusion, and fosters a supportive environment for all individuals. Department faculty are dedicated teachers, productive scholars, and engaged members of the campus community, including support for allied programs in Africana Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, International Studies, Latino and Latin American Studies, Native American Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The History Department has a well- established reputation for excellence in preparing secondary social studies teachers with its unique focus and commitment to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning of history (SoTL).</p> <ul> <li>Teach and supervise secondary social studies teacher candidates; in addition to teaching social studies methods courses, the candidate may also have the opportunity to teach survey- level and upper division undergraduate and graduate courses in history specialties. </li><li>Pursue a robust research and publication agenda including in history, social studies education and the scholarship on the teaching and learning of history. </li><li>Engage in department, school, university, and professional service opportunities. </li><li>Work with multiple constituencies within and beyond the university including outreach to and collaboration with grade 7-12 school partners. </li><li>Collaborate with department colleagues in the development, delivery, and accreditation of the Adolescence Education Social Studies (SST) program housed in the History Department. </li></ul> <p>Functional and Supervisory Relationships</p> <p>This position reports to the History Department chair and works closely with department history and SST program faculty, including the SST Coordinator.</p> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>PhD. in History, or related field relevant to adolescent social studies education with disciplinary-specific training and coursework in history. </li><li>Demonstrated effectiveness teaching college-level history and/or secondary social studies teacher preparation. </li><li>Demonstrated commitment to social studies teacher preparation seen in activities such as publications in the Scholarship on the Teaching and Learning of History; engagement in efforts to promote history learning in grades 7-12; secondary- level social studies teaching experience; experience in grades 7- 12 teacher preparation; and meeting certification and accreditation requirements. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Secondary-level social studies teaching experience. </li><li>Leadership experience or potential in secondary social studies teacher preparation, and meeting certification and accreditation requirements. </li><li>PhD. in history, with specialties that contribute to the department's breadth of offerings and opportunities for students. </li><li>Teaching experience and research that demonstrates ability to contribute to the department's emphasis on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning of History. </li><li>Experience relevant to preparing teacher candidates to work effectively with diverse student populations, and to meet evolving expectations for social studies teaching and learning. </li><li>Current or past teacher certification in secondary social studies. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills & Abilities About the University</p> <p>A top public university of approximately 6,600 students located in the geographic center of New York State, SUNY Cortland provides accessible, affordable education to students from across the U.S. body.
