This role provides on-site consultations, supports regulatory compliance, partners with faculty and research staff, and assists the research safety committees. The position also advances risk mitigation, training, and incident response efforts. The Research Safety Coordinator promotes continuous improvement, enhances safety communication, and helps ensure safe, compliant, and effective research environments.</p> <p>Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience</p> <ul> <li>Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience. </li></ul> <p>Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Experience working in a highly collaborative environment, partnering with multiple stakeholder groups, solving problems, and delivering exceptional customer service. </li><li>Experience serving on committees. </li><li>Laboratory experience conducting experiments involving chemical, biological, radiation, and/or physical hazards. </li><li>Experience conducting laboratory safety inspections or consultations. </li><li>Experience conducting in-person training and developing professional reports. </li><li>Experience writing or reviewing research protocols and standard operating procedures. </li><li>Experience collecting and analyzing data. </li><li>Eager and willing to learn new research and laboratory safety principles and practices as necessary to successfully fulfill duties. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge/Skills/Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Skills to effectively collaborate with laboratory personnel, principal investigators, department chairs, and the research safety team to accomplish objectives. </li><li>Excellent writing skills to prepare reports. </li><li>Basic knowledge of committee operations. </li><li>Basic knowledge of research and laboratory safety principles and practices. </li><li>Ability to interpret and apply research safety regulations, standards, and guidelines. </li><li>Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. </li><li>Creativity to research and recommend innovative solutions to complex research safety problems. </li><li>Ability to conduct consultations with laboratory personnel. </li><li>Excellent analytical and decision-making skills. </li><li>Ability to work independently. </li><li>Proficient in using Microsoft Office. </li></ul> <p>Job Duties</p> <p>Job Duty</p> <p>Conduct on-site safety consultations with research laboratory personnel and provide guidance on lab hazards, risk assessments, work practices, safety equipment, facilities, waste management, training, records, and other laboratory safety principles or practices. Assist with the implementation of corrective actions for deficiencies identified during lab safety inspections and informal lab visits. Provide feedback to Research Safety Programs on the effectiveness of research and laboratory safety policies and procedures.</p> <p>Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty</p> <p>Assist labs to fulfill research safety committee requirements for research involving chemical, biological, and radiation hazards. Serve as a member of the Chemical Safety Committee (CSC) and assist labs to follow proper procedures for high-hazard chemicals and processes. Serve as a liaison between the researchers and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and assist the IBC to minimize the administrative burden of compliance activities.</p> <p>Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty</p> <p>Assist departments to implement plans to effectively inform new faculty of research safety requirements. Assist lab personnel with procedures to properly decommission laboratory equipment and rooms upon request. Assist in ensuring all hazards are removed from vacant laboratory rooms before the lab is reassigned. Encourage reporting of laboratory incidents and assist with lab safety incident investigations upon request.</p> <p>Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty</p> <p>Establish methods to improve department and college-level communication on research safety and compliance. Support strategic initiatives and special projects to improve laboratory safety and reduce risk. Assist to coordinate training or seminars to promote an improved laboratory safety culture. Identify specialized research safety training needs. Assist the college and/or department to identify internal or external subject-matter experts when needed to assist with risk assessments for projects involving unique hazards or risks.</p> <p>Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty</p> <p>Attend research safety staff meetings upon request. Assist in maintaining updated research laboratory safety records that include principal investigators, lab locations, and hazards. Periodically conduct assessments or collect data to determine the scope of risks impacting labs. Prepare monthly reports on work activities with requested metrics.
