<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Position: PT Vacant / Abandoned Inspector</p> <p>Location: Public Property</p> <p>Date Opened: March 18, 2025</p> <p>Date Closed: Until Filled</p> <p>Position Type: Part Time - 19/hours per week - Union</p> <p>Hourly: $40.40 - $49.68 (Step System)</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities:</p> <p>Assist the Commissioner of Buildings in the performance of his/her duties. Inspects buildings in connection with the enforcement and interpretation of the Vacant or Abandoned City Ordinance and other applicable ordinances relating to vacant buildings, as well as zoning enforcement; Inspects properties to ensure that vacant buildings and</p> <p>structures are not open to the weather and are safe for passersby. Responds to complaints related to dangerous situations, such as abandoned houses, unsafe complaints, or other complaints. Issues letters of violation, pursues court action; instructs contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners, when necessary, to correct situations that</p> <p>are not in conformity with applicable codes. Performs similar or related duties as required, as situation dictates or as assigned by the Commissioner of Buildings or his/her designee.</p> <p>Supervision:</p> <p>Works under the general direction of the Commissioner of Buildings and in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws and local ordinances; reviews all unusual problems or situations with the Commissioner of Buildings prior to taking any required action.</p> <p>Requirements:</p> <p>Preferred Education and Experience:</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: Five years of experience in supervision of building construction, code enforcement, design or zoning enforcement; an Associate's Degree in a related field desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.</p> <p>Additional Requirement:</p> <p>Massachusetts Certification as a Local Building Inspector required within 18 months of employment.</p> <p>Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license and a dependable vehicle.</p> <p>Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:</p> <p>Knowledge of the materials and methods of building construction and equipment and knowledge of the Massachusetts Building Code and other applicable state statutes, rules, and regulations; knowledge of accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe egress; thorough knowledge of field inspection practices. Ability to enforce codes and regulations fairly and impartially; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; ability to interact effectively with the general public, construction personnel, technical personnel, and state and local officials; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to maintain complete and accurate inspection records; ability to stay informed of code changes.</p> <p>Excellent communication skills and public relations skills.</p> <p>Requirements:</p> <p>Physical Demands:</p> <p>Moderate physical effort is demanded in making inspections. While conducting field inspections, the employee is required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, climb or balance, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Agility is required to access all areas of construction sites. Vision requirements</p> <p>include the ability to read and analyze documents, use a computer, and operate a motor vehicle.</p> <p>Work Environment:</p> <p>Performs administrative work in office conditions; inspection work is conducted in the field with exposure to noise and the hazardous conditions associated with construction sites requiring the use of basic safety equipment. Operates standard office equipment and an automobile; has frequent contact with the general public, other City employees, officials, contractors, homeowners, and builders; may have access to records of legal</p> <p>proceedings.
