<p>Position Title:</p> <p>Laboratory Technician II - Part-time Benefits Eligible</p> <p>Job Group:</p> <p>Merit</p> <p>Required Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Two years of related laboratory experience including one year as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience, or Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification, or Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Experience working in a chemistry or related laboratory setting, either through academic coursework or professional employment</p> <p>Experience supporting a chemistry lecture demonstration program or similar instructional support activities</p> <p>Experience preparing chemical reagents for instructional or research use</p> <p>Experience with setup, calibration, use and maintenance of equipment such as laboratory balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, voltmeters, power supplies, hotplates, and stirrer</p> <p>Experience handling and disposing of hazardous materials, including acids, bases, flammables, oxidizers, and chemical carcinogens, in accordance with safety protocols</p> <p>Job Description:</p> <p>The Department of Chemistry at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for a Laboratory Technician II position. Under the direction of the senior teaching lab coordinator, this position will primarily support the needs of lecture demonstration program and a large chemistry laboratory program. As time permits, this position will also float between different chemistry lab areas and assist as needed.</p> <p>Duties include:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Preparing chemical reagents, instruments, and equipment for lecture demonstrations</p> </li><li> <p>Updating the demonstration schedule with requested lecture demonstrations</p> </li><li> <p>Setting up and making lecture demonstrations available according to schedule, and cleaning up lecture demonstrations, including proper disposal of waste.</p> </li><li> <p>Managing supplies and reagents needed for demonstration</p> </li><li> <p>Cleaning and calibrating demonstration instruments, and arranging for repair of broken or malfunctioning equipment</p> </li><li> <p>Handling of hazardous materials occasionally</p> </li></ul> <p>The candidate may lift up to 50 pounds on a weekly basis, with or without reasonable accommodation. This position involves working in a team-oriented environment and includes training and collaborating effectively with student staff. Manual dexterity is essential for handling standard laboratory equipment, including burets and pipets. The role also involves working with hazardous materials such as chemical carcinogens, highly toxic substances, acids, bases, flammables, and oxidizers.</p> <p>If you're someone who enjoys planning ahead, working independently, and contributing to a supportive academic environment, this position could be a great fit for you. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment. </li><li>Knowledge of principles of sanitation, health hazards, and the necessary precautionary measures. </li><li>Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and equipment and supplies required. </li><li>Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills. </li><li>Ability to use proper lifting and bending techniques. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively with others. </li><li>Ability to follow oral and written instructions. </li><li>Ability to collect data, keep accurate records, and prepare reports. </li><li>Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and determine percentages. </li><li>Ability to work with computerized inventory control systems. </li><li>Ability to use and care for tools in maintenance and repair work. </li><li>Ability to perform difficult lab procedures and prepare chemical solutions according to instructions. </li><li>Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks. </li><li>Ability to exercise functional supervision over employees. </li></ul> <p>Appointment Type:</p> <p>Regular</p> <p>Number of Months Employed Per Year:</p> <p>10 Month Work Period</p> <p>Time Type:</p> <p>Part time</p> <p>Pay Grade:</p> <p>08</p> <p>Application Instructions:</p> <p>To apply for this position, please click on "Apply" and complete the Employment Application.
