<p>ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:</p> <p>The City of Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation (TP+T) Department supports the safety and health of the Cambridge community by creating and sustaining a high-quality street and parking system that supports a range of transportation options for all those who live, travel, and park in Cambridge.</p> <p>DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:</p> <p>Reporting to the Supervising Engineer in the Street Management Division, the Engineering Technician provides support for the daily operations of the Engineering unit, relating to pavement markings, traffic signs, traffic signals, traffic controls, parking meters, bike racks, traffic studies, and other tasks as assigned.</p> <p>This position oversees inspection and contractor supervision relating to the installation and maintenance of traffic controls, pavement markings, bicycle racks and bicycle fix-it stations. During the pavement marking season, roughly April through November, the position requires night work on a regular basis to oversee the installation of pavement markings for new projects and for the maintenance of existing lines. The position also works to address maintenance issues for all types of traffic control devices and assists the traffic engineers with project development and design.</p> <p>Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:</p> <ul> <li>Conduct annual citywide inspections of pavement markings. </li><li>Produce maintenance lists for city and contractor crews. </li><li>Oversee pavement marking contractors during overnight installation. </li><li>Layout of pavement markings with city and contractor crews </li><li>Layout of locations for new bike rack installations </li><li>Oversee contractors for installation and repair of bike racks. </li><li>Mark out underground traffic signal utilities (i.e. DigSafe). </li><li>Work with Engineering staff to assist with ongoing projects, studies, and citizen requests. </li><li>Perform data collection as needed, which may include traffic counts, observations, speed data collection, and field measurements. </li><li>Prepare traffic control work orders for the installation, improvement, and maintenance of signs, parking meters, and other traffic control devices. </li><li>Assist with snow emergency traffic operations. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Associate's Degree in Engineering Science, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Technology, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience required. </li><li>Three to five years of experience in construction inspection, traffic maintenance work, or similar is highly desirable. A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field may be substituted for the required experience. </li><li>Must be able to conduct tasks with little supervision and have good oral and written communication skills. </li><li>Must be well organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities. </li><li>Must have the ability to understand engineering plans. </li><li>Must be proficient in computer use including Microsoft Office applications and have the ability to quickly learn the department's suite of software. </li><li>Massachusetts Class D driver's license required. Experience with riding a bicycle or micromobility device preferred. </li><li>The City of Cambridge's workforce, like the community it serves, is diverse. Work indoors is in a professional office setting. Work outdoors includes construction sites and congested city roadways under all weather conditions. Work will include frequent overnight shifts during the spring, summer, and fall seasons to cover pavement marking operations. Supervising Engineer may adjust work hours to cover operational needs.
