<p>SUMMARY</p> <p>Prepares materials and equipment needed for science labs; manages the disposal of materials and maintenance of equipment by performing the following duties:</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.</p> <p>Other duties may be assigned.</p> <ul> <li>Prepare and properly label chemical solutions for use in laboratories. </li><li>Prepare materials and assemble, disassemble, clean and store equipment needed for all sections of each lab. </li><li>Deliver chemicals and supplies to designated work areas. </li><li>Set up equipment if directed. </li><li>Manage the proper cleanup of all laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials including the proper disposal of hazardous wastes. </li><li>Ensure that laboratories are stocked with basic supplies and cleanliness is maintained. </li><li>Update prep sheets for assigned laboratory courses as needed </li><li>Assist Laboratory Manager with maintenance of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) </li><li>Monitor inventory of supplies and chemicals for assigned rooms and courses. </li><li>Use online inventory management system to reflect current inventory and make requests for needed materials. </li><li>Monitor the Central Storage Area (CSA) and process hazardous waste according to hazardous waste determinations. </li><li>Helps with computer management by updating department laptop computers and performing software updates specific to Department instrumentation. </li></ul> <p>Additional Duties</p> <ul> <li>Assist with preparing materials for the microbiology and biology courses as deemed necessary, including working with bacterial cultures. </li><li>Assist with inspections of safety equipment as needed. </li><li>Assists Laboratory Manager with special projects as needed and as time allows. </li><li>Assist with the supervision of student workers </li></ul> <p>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>Directly supervises student lab aides in the Department of Natural Sciences. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Department's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <p>Education/Experience</p> <p>Associate's degree or higher, bachelor's degree preferred in Natural Science or related field, with hands on experience in the lab.</p> <p>Technical Skills</p> <p>Familiarity with a variety of chemical instrumentation and equipment. Ability to accurately make solutions with specific concentrations as needed in the preparation documents. Ability to implement proper sterilization and pure culture techniques.</p> <p>Computer Skills</p> <p>Basic computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Windows based environment to create word documents and spreadsheets. Knowledge of Vernier software and instrumentation preferred. Ability to learn other software and web-based platforms.</p> <p>Language Skills</p> <p>Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.</p> <p>Mathematical Skills</p> <p>Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry including proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to accurately use the analytical balance. Ability to calculate molarity and percentage of solution volume adjustments.</p> <p>Interpersonal Skills</p> <p>Ability to interact effectively and professionally with faculty, staff and students.</p> <p>Reasoning Ability</p> <p>Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
