As a student lab aide in the Nanofab - Electron Microscopy and Surface Analysis Lab (EMSAL), you will get the opportunity to use some of the most advanced imaging and analytical equipment on campus. This position provides a unique opportunity to learn advanced, marketable skills and is ideal for undergraduates pursuing studies in all engineering fields as well as chemistry, physics, geology, biology and more. The Nanofab EMSAL regularly works with faculty research projects from across campus and the successful candidate would get to interact with a diverse set of research projects in every major engineering and science discipline. Students would also be exposed to a variety of industry research projects and have the opportunity to network with representatives from leading technology companies from across the Wasatch Front and beyond. For more information about the lab, go to:</p> <p>https://emsal.nanofab.utah.edu/</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>Assist with the daily operations of the EMSAL, with a focus on operating the Scanning Electron Microscopes in the lab. Students will learn from the full time scientific staff of the lab, and will report to the directly for guidance and super vision. Direct interaction with graduate students and other researchers is required and strong communication skills (oral and written) are mandatory. Job duties will also involve routine maintenance of advanced analytical instruments and assisting users with the lab. In addition, the candidate will learn to become proficient in several other imaging and analysis techniques. This job description is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.</p> <p>All students are welcome to apply, but a strong emphasis is placed on candidates pursuing studies in engineering and science fields. Successful completion of General Chemistry and University Physics (or AP coursework equivalents) is desired.</p> <p>Strong oral and written communication skills desired.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications Preferences</p> <p>This is an entry level position and on the job training is provided. The ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; the ability to keep accurate records; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. A general knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment and terminology; the ability to operate and care for laboratory equipment; and a knowledge of appropriate specimen handling techniques preferred.
