As the storytellers of South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) staff share the rich natural history and cultural diversity, innovative spirit, and artistic creativity of the state through the museum's permanent collections, educational programs, exhibitions and digital resources.</p> <p>SCSM is seeking a Janitorial Lead who combines hands-on custodial expertise with strong leadership skills. This role is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety throughout the museum's public and staff areas, while supervising janitorial staff and supporting special events. Under the general supervision of the Director of Visitor Services and direct supervision of the Janitorial Coordinator, the Janitorial Lead ensures that all facilities are maintained to the highest standards.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li> <p>Supervise janitorial staff, assign daily tasks, and provide on-the-job guidance</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain cleanliness across museum facilities including restrooms, galleries, offices, and event spaces</p> </li><li> <p>Perform advanced cleaning tasks such as floor care, buffing, and window washing</p> </li><li> <p>Ensure proper use of cleaning equipment and chemicals in accordance with OSHA/MSDS standards</p> </li><li> <p>Monitor staff performance and ensure compliance with safety and cleaning protocols</p> </li><li> <p>Track and manage cleaning supply inventory; assist with distribution</p> </li><li> <p>Support museum events by coordinating setup/breakdown and supervising event cleaning coverage</p> </li><li> <p>Assist with onboarding and training of new janitorial staff</p> </li><li> <p>Communicate scheduling conflicts, absences, and equipment issues to the Janitorial Coordinator</p> </li><li> <p>Report maintenance concerns and cleanliness deficiencies promptly</p> </li><li> <p>Perform other duties as assigned to support museum operations</p> </li></ul> <p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p> <ul> <li> <p>High school diploma or equivalent</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to lift 15-50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and pushing/pulling carts throughout the shift</p> </li><li> <p>Willingness to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to handle cleaning chemicals and operate necessary equipment</p> </li><li> <p>Strong verbal and written communication skills</p> </li><li> <p>Experience managing staff schedules and assignments</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of cleaning techniques, supplies, and equipment</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to work independently and collaboratively</p> </li><li> <p>Commitment to maintaining high cleanliness and safety standards</p> </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li> <p>Prior custodial or janitorial experience, especially in a supervisory role</p> </li><li> <p>Familiarity with commercial cleaning tools, chemicals, and OSHA/MSDS guidelines</p> </li><li> <p>Experience onboarding and training new staff</p> </li><li> <p>Proven ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors</p> </li><li> <p>Experience coordinating cleaning efforts for events or large public spaces</p> </li><li> <p>Comfort working in a museum or similar public-facing environment</p> </li></ul>
