<p>Summary:</p> <p>Under the general supervision</p> <p>of the Professional Nurse provides direct patient care to the surgical</p> <p>patient. Assists the surgical team</p> <p>with/by positioning patients scrubbing preparing and cleaning instruments and</p> <p>restocking of supplies. Maintains</p> <p>patient confidentiality. Fosters patient and family centered care in accordance</p> <p>with the Brown University Health mission vision and</p> <p>values and the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital and with consideration</p> <p>of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural</p> <p>patterns</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <p>Prepares</p> <p>operating room in a timely manner with all anticipated supplies instruments</p> <p>and equipment.</p> <p>Scrubs</p> <p>on a variety of surgical procedures; anticipates surgeon needs passes</p> <p>instruments sponges and sutures occasionally assists in suctioning holding</p> <p>retractors and cutting sutures.</p> <p>Maintains</p> <p>strict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff.</p> <p>Checks</p> <p>all equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure.</p> <p>Demonstrates</p> <p>competence in care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling of</p> <p>specimens.</p> <p>Accurately</p> <p>performs surgical counts according to policy and procedure; is aware of numbers</p> <p>and kinds of packs/sponges/instruments etc. in a surgical site. Maintains an</p> <p>orderly sterile instrument table according to hospital standard to facilitate</p> <p>efficiency.</p> <p>Assists</p> <p>in positioning of patients according to department procedure.</p> <p>Cleans</p> <p>and prepares room between cases and after the last case; restocks as needed.</p> <p>Cleans</p> <p>and prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization.</p> <p>Keep</p> <p>accurate account of medications and solutions used during a procedure.</p> <p>May</p> <p>transport patients to and from the patient units operating room and PACUs.</p> <p>Participates</p> <p>in hospital/department quality improvement activities.</p> <p>Perform other related duties</p> <p>as required. Performs all essential functions with consideration of the</p> <p>age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent patient. Fosters patient and family centered care and</p> <p>Nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital?s</p> <p>mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all</p> <p>developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.</p> <p>Other information:</p> <p>BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or GED is required </li><li>Completion of at least one of the following options is required: </li><li>Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or </li><li>Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program or </li><li>Current certification as a CST or </li><li>Current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered) or </li><li>3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist </li><li>Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program </li><li>Current BLS Certification is required upon hire </li></ul> <p>Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.</p> <p>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>None.</p> <p>Brown University Health is an Equal Opportunity employer.
