<p>Job Title School of Nursing & Health Innovations Learning Assistant Department SONHI Office Administration Terms and Hours Approx. 3 - 5 hours/week Job Category Student Employment Hourly Wage Portland Metro Minimum Wage ($16.80) Job Summary</p> <p>Learning Assistants (LAs) will support student learning in selected lecture courses. LAs may work with other student LAs and a speci?c instructor to plan, coordinate, and deliver weekly learning forums to support content being taught in lecture courses. LAs will additionally support instructors with in-class work as their schedules permit. LAs must feel comfortable explaining concepts covered in the courses they will be supporting. Supported lecture courses are NRS 325 and NRS 326 (Pathophysiology and Pharmacology I and II).</p> <ul> <li> <p>LAs are hired for the full academic year to support learning in both fall and spring semesters.</p> </li><li> <p>LAs will be assigned to a speci?c instructor who will provide support and mentorship. LAs will work with their mentoring instructor to learn about the class material, explore teaching strategies, and provide in-class instructional support as time allows. Mentors and LAs should have approximately one hour of contact per week (paid time), which can occur during class or outside of class.</p> </li><li> <p>LAs will co-lead outside-of-class learning forums with other LAs in teams of two or more.</p> </li><li> <p>LAs will typically work ~3-4 hours per week during the term. This time includes:</p> </li><li> <p>1 hour of LA: instructor contact time, which can occur in class or outside of class (in-class preferred so that the LA can support the instructor's teaching work)</p> </li><li> <p>1 hour to review class materials and prepare for learning forums</p> </li><li> <p>2 hours of LA: student contact time, typically spent hosting learning forums each week.</p> </li><li> <p>Days/times of learning forums will be decided in coordination with faculty and 300-level students. LAs should be prepared to facilitate learning forums during the week and approximately every other Sunday.</p> </li><li> <p>LAs may find they need to spend additional time reviewing class materials above the alloted one hour per week; this time is unpaid.</p> </li><li> <p>LAs must enroll in a 1-credit upper division elective class each semester (currently designated NRS 491: Peer Teaching and Learning in Nursing Education.) The course will be taken twice (in both fall and spring semesters). The name or department of the class is subject to change, but it will count as an elective regardless of any changes. The class will focus on program coordination, developing teaching skills, and program evaluation.</p> </li><li> <p>A mandatory, paid 4-hour orientation and teaching workshop will be offered during the week before school starts in August.</p> </li><li> <p>It is expected that LAs are senior nursing students first, and job schedules and duties may be modified to support the LAs' own academic progression.</p> </li></ul> <p>Core Duties</p> <ul> <li>Enroll in the 1-credit Peer Teaching and Learning in Nursing (or equivalent) class. </li><li>Plan, coordinate, and deliver weekly learning forums for enrolled students. </li><li>Meet weekly with mentoring faculty to discuss teaching strategies. </li><li>Collect and report learning forum attendance data. </li><li>Attend all required meetings and classes. </li><li>Participate in program evaluation. </li><li>Attend lecture classes if at all possible, schedule-permitting. </li><li>Submit a correct, bi-monthly time sheet via an online portal to supervisor. </li><li>Other relevant duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Successful completion of NRS 325 and 326 with an overall grade of B+ or better (88% or better based on SONHI grading scale) or demonstration of consistent improvement over time. </li><li>Satisfactory progress toward a degree. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>An established relationship with 325/326 instructor(s) - this can be from previous enrollment in a 325/326 course or another course, outside activity, etc. </li><li>A strong recommendation from an instructor of NRS 325 or 326.
