<p>Posted: May 6, 2025 Closed: May 21, 2025</p> <p>Employment Opportunity: District POSITION: Director of K-12 Physical Education, Health and Family Consumer Science 2025-2026 School Year</p> <p>Shrewsbury Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the Director of Physical Education, Health, and Family Consumer Science, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.</p> <p>Position Description: The K-12 Physical Education, Health, and Family Consumer Science Department Director is responsible for the instructional program in their subject areas for the school district, grades K-12. The focus of the position is curriculum development and implementation, professional development, and program assessment. In addition, the teacher for the "Little Colonials" preschool program at Shrewsbury High School, reports to this position.</p> <p>We are interested in candidates who are invested in the achievement, equity, and access of all learners in and beyond the classroom. Candidates with diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, class, and/or gender background and experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.</p> <p>Physical Education Program: Physical education is an integral part of the total education of the student, contributing to the physical development of the individual through promotion and appreciation of physical fitness and activity. It is a planned sequence of learning experiences designed to fulfill the growth, development, and behavior needs of each student. We recognize the unique opportunity physical education has to contribute to social and emotional development, opportunities for positive peer group interaction, good sportsmanship, and proper self-discipline and control.</p> <p>Health Program: The purpose of comprehensive school health is to provide each student with ongoing learning opportunities designed to maximize the prospect that each student will make positive decisions throughout life. The course of study will enable students to examine the options available to today's youth and identify components that are high risk and to be avoided. Our focus is clearly on prevention and promotion of wellness, not merely to prevent disease and disability.</p> <p>Health education provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate health-related knowledge, attitudes and practices. It integrates the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of health. This instruction is part of a sequential program designed to reinforce knowledge and positive attitudes to contribute to optimum health and wellness.</p> <p>Family and Consumer Science Program (including the Little Colonials preschool program): The Family and Consumer Science Program strives to encourage the development of each individual student to his/her fullest potential. There is no greater way to improve society than to improve each family's home life. This is especially pertinent as the basis of our curriculum reflects the core of daily living. By offering courses in child growth and development (including hands-on experience in our "Little Colonials" preschool program), consumer education, food and nutrition and personal growth, we attempt to give each student self-esteem, confidence, and awareness of others, in order to become a responsible contributor to society.</p> <p>Family and Consumer Sciences is one of three disciplines within the Health Frameworks. Each of the Comprehensive Health content areas clearly relates to the discipline of Family and Consumer Sciences. Resource Management expands personal advocacy beyond consumer health. It includes managing home, consumer, workplace and environmental resources, which is the consumer education connection with topics such as child development, food science, nutrition and sports nutrition.</p> <p>The K-12 Department Director position functions in accordance with the provisions of the contract between the Shrewsbury School Committee and the Shrewsbury Education Association.</p> <p>The Physical Education, Health, and Family Consumer Science Department Director K-12 reports to the Assistant Superintendent for Community Partnerships and Well-being for the coordination of curriculum, annual budget development, ordering supplies and curriculum materials, and providing professional development for faculty. As a Primary Evaluator, the Physical Education, Health and Family Consumer Science Director will observe classrooms, provide feedback, and write formative and summative evaluations. The Director will work closely with High School administration on the scheduling of students at the high school level and with all other principals on scheduling at their schools.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Position supervises PE, Health, and Family Consumer Science (including the "Little Colonials" preschool program) educators </li><li>Works collaboratively with school principals to build district-wide class schedules </li><li>Plans, develops, and integrates curriculum at all grade levels </li><li>Facilitates department meetings </li><li>Develops instructional strategies and teaches model lessons for teachers </li><li>Teaches classes as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent (position includes direct teaching) </li><li>Supports and promotes the annual goals of the district </li><li>Participates as an active member in district leadership meetings </li><li>Maintains connections to professional organizations </li><li>Collaborates with school principals on curriculum integration, supervision and evaluation, and budget management </li><li>Leads search and recommendation process for superintendent appointment of new teachers to department </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>A minimum of Professional licensure in either Physical Education or Health/Family and Consumer Science. Applicants with licensure in both areas will be strongly considered </li><li>Certification as a director </li><li>Demonstrated knowledge of various areas of a physical education and health department and consistent demonstration of the values of Shrewsbury Public Schools </li></ul> <p>Work Year/Compensation: The Physical Education, Health, and Family Consumer Science Director work year is based on the school year calendar (typically 184 days) plus ten days. Salary will be based on the step system, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
