<p>I. Position Description</p> <p>Performs laboratory tests to determine the chemical and/or physical characteristics of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for purposes of process, quality, and environmental control by performing the duties listed below.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Ability to work by himself or herself with little or no direct supervisor from another Lab Tech I, II, III or Laboratory Supervisor or Quality Manager. </li><li>Sets-up, adjusts, and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as: Arc-Spark Emission Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer, Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, Induction Furnace, pH meter, analytical balance and other equipment. </li><li>Troubleshoot minor instrument and equipment errors. </li><li>Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas using proper techniques in measuring volumes of liquids and weights of solids and liquids. </li><li>Prepares and makes samples for testing. </li><li>Tests materials qualitatively and quantitatively such as in-process material, slag, dross, raw materials, liquid effluents, and off-gases using spectrographic or chromatographic equipment for elements or substances and records the test results. </li><li>Tests production samples of in-process and finished product to verify conformity to specifications/targets and records the results of testing. </li><li>Records results of finished product testing into corporate SAP computer system. </li><li>Issues instructions for in-process treatments to adjust chemical composition. </li><li>Troubleshoots minor in-process production problems. </li><li>Test environmental samples to aid in the determination of the disposition of wastes/effluents. </li><li>Complies with all environmental, health, safety, quality systems and housekeeping programs. </li><li>Assists in the training of newly hired laboratory personnel. </li><li>Conducts himself or herself in a professional manner. </li><li>Performs other duties, as assigned or authorized by laboratory management </li></ul> <p>II. Qualifications</p> <p>A. PRE-HIRE REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>Basic computer skills. </li><li>Understanding of the basic functions of Microsoft Excel and Word Programs. </li><li>Completion of college basic chemistry and college algebra courses. </li><li>Excellent interpersonal communications skills; written and verbal. </li><li>Meet proficiency criteria. </li></ul> <p>B. POST-HIRE TRAINING</p> <ul> <li>Environmental training applicable to the job </li><li>Safety training for applicable equipment </li><li>Job instructional training </li><li>Quality system familiarization </li><li>ISO 14001 awareness, EMS objectives and targets, plant significant environmental impacts </li><li>OHSAS 18001 Awareness, OH & S-MS Objectives and Goals, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control. </li></ul> <p>III. Physical Requirements & Work Environment</p> <p>A. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus</p> <p>B. WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <p>While performing the duties of his job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.</p> <ul> <li>If duties require entry to an arsenic or cadmium-controlled area, appropriate respiratory protection must be worn. </li></ul> <p>IV.
