<p>Job Description:</p> <p>The Adult Support Paraeducator (Special Education) provides various forms of instructional assistance and support to the teachers. The paraeducator will work with children with special education needs.</p> <p>TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Assist students, under the direction of the teacher or therapist, with assignments or learning/therapeutic activities </li><li>Plan the execution of follow-up activities to reinforce initial instruction provided by the teacher </li><li>Work with children individually and in small groups to reinforce basic skills and to check their use of instructional materials </li><li>Assist in the development and construction of materials to be used in reinforcement activities </li><li>Share in the maintenance of the classroom </li><li>Help describe the instructional program to the community and encourage parent involvement </li><li>Attend all meetings as requested </li><li>Serve as translator when necessary </li><li>Assist the teacher in escorting the children </li><li>Assist in all behavior modification systems in the school </li><li>Supervise time-out according to established procedures </li><li>Assist in the supervision and maintaining control of student conduct throughout the building, including returning students to school who have run from the building </li><li>Assist in producing, collecting, inventorying, and storing instructional materials </li><li>Assist in maintaining school attendance records </li><li>Procure, set up, operate and return instructional equipment </li><li>Organize and supervise student work areas </li><li>Assist in preparing bulletin boards and exhibits </li><li>Correct objective tests and assignments </li><li>Assist with field trips </li><li>Provided one to one assistance as outlined in the student's IEP </li><li>Maintain appropriate time-out records </li><li>Maintain order in the classroom in the teacher's absence; notify the school administrator in such cases where behavior and/or other problems arise beyond paraeducator' s control </li><li>Greet visitors in a courteous and professional manner </li><li>Assist staff with student home visits </li><li>Assist in physically restraining students according to established procedures if authorized and trained to do so, and if the situation requires </li><li>Assist in the toileting process for students as necessary </li><li>Assist in the feeding of students as directed and supervised by the teacher and nurse </li><li>Attend PPT meetings as required </li><li>Participate in all in-service training/staff meetings offered by the department </li><li>Lift students when necessary </li><li>Assist in the loading and unloading of students from the bus </li><li>Perform other related duties as required </li></ul> <p>SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Associates Degree or a High School Diploma and ParaPro</p> </li><li> <p>(ParaPro Exam Link https://www.ets.org/parapro.html)</p> </li><li> <p>Previous experience working with groups of children</p> </li><li> <p>Patience and understanding of children with special needs</p> </li><li> <p>Must maintain confidentiality at all times</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to handle stressful situations</p> </li><li> <p>Able to work in a team environment</p> </li><li> <p>Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills desirable</p> </li></ul> <p>SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Pay will be commensurate with experience, education level, and in accordance with the Hartford Federation of Paraeducators' (HFP) Collective Bargaining Agreement salary schedule.
