<p>There is currently one (1) vacancy for a Senior Equipment Mechanic full-time position in the Public Works Department. </p> <p>This recruitment is open on a continuous basis and may close at any time. This recruitment requires that your certification in Fire Pumps from the California Fire Service Training Division be uploaded with the application to be considered complete. Applicants appearing best qualified based upon a review of the application and responses to supplemental questions will be invited to participate in the testing process. </p> <p>DEFINITION: Performs a variety of servicing, maintenance, and repair tasks on equipment, vehicles, and fire apparatus.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor. May provide technical direction to Equipment Mechanic I-II. </p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: </p> <p>Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following duties and responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of duties and responsibilities is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.</p> <p>Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:</p> <p>Positions in this classification typically perform a full range of duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Inspects, maintains, and repairs specialized fire apparatus, vehicles and equipment including aerial ladders and pumps;</p> </li><li> <p>Services, maintains, and repairs fuel, hybrid, and other alternative powered vehicles and equipment; diagnoses and troubleshoots problems associated with all systems including engines, fuel and electrical systems; determines the extent of necessary repairs; analyzes engine performance and emissions and makes adjustments and repairs; performs field service work as needed;</p> </li><li> <p>Services and repairs City generators and storm drain pumps;</p> </li><li> <p>Fabricates and welds parts and equipment for vehicle and equipment, maintenance, and repair;</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with coordinating the purchasing, ordering and inventory of equipment maintenance parts and materials;</p> </li><li> <p>Keeps records of time, materials and parts used and work performed; inputs into automated system;</p> </li><li> <p>Attends training related to repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles; stays abreast of new technology;</p> </li><li> <p>Maintains the shop in a clean, neat and orderly condition;</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in the training of less experienced workers;</p> </li><li> <p>Regularly and predictably attends work; and</p> </li><li> <p>Performs related duties as assigned.</p> </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:</p> <p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.</p> <p>Knowledge of: </p> <ul> <li> <p>Maintenance and repair on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment including engines, fuel and electrical systems;</p> </li><li> <p>Technical and automated equipment used for the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;</p> </li><li> <p>Principles and mechanics of fuel, hybrid, alternative powered, and diesel-powered engines and safe operating characteristics of each;</p> </li><li> <p>Equipment capabilities, limitations and safe operating characteristics;</p> </li><li> <p>Principles and practices in fabricating and welding;</p> </li><li> <p>Parts and supplies needed to perform a variety of maintenance and repairs on equipment/vehicles;</p> </li><li> <p>Specialized maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and equipment; </p> </li><li> <p>Fleet software systems; and</p> </li><li> <p>Safe work practices.</p> </li></ul> <p>Skill in:</p> <ul> <li> <p> Performing specialized inspections, maintenance, and repairs on fire apparatus and equipment;</p> </li><li> <p>Performing journey-level mechanical work, including the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs;</p> </li><li> <p>Operating a variety of technical diagnostic equipment used on equipment, including computerized automotive diagnostic equipment;</p> </li><li> <p>Using hand and power tools associated with the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of motorized equipment and vehicles;</p> </li><li> <p>Test driving vehicles for quality control and safety;</p> </li><li> <p>Maintaining work, time, and material records;</p> </li><li> <p>Understanding and following complex directions and instructions;</p> </li><li> <p>Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; </p> </li><li> <p>Appearing for work on time;</p> </li><li> <p>Following directions from a supervisor;</p> </li><li> <p>Understanding and following posted work rules and procedures;</p> </li><li> <p>Accepting constructive criticism; and</p> </li><li> <p>Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, other City employees, and the public.</p> </li><li> <p>May be required to work evenings and extended hours.</p> </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:</p> <p> </p> <p>Experience: </p> <p>Three (3) years' experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of fuel and alternative-fueled vehicles and equipment.</p> <p>Education: </p> <p>Equivalent to graduation from high school or GED and supplemented by successful completion of specialized training in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and equipment.</p> <p>Licensing/Certificates: </p> <p>Due to the performance of some field duties which requires the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid Class B California driver's license is required. A valid Class A California driver's license is highly desirable.</p> <p>Certification in Fire Pumps from the California Fire Service Training Division is required. </p> <p>Certification as an Emergency Vehicle Technician is highly desirable.</p> <p>Working Conditions:</p> <p>Regularly exposed to engine and equipment sounds and smells.</p> <p>Regularly required to lift and/or carry heavy objects up to 75 pounds.</p> <p>Disaster Service Worker: </p> <p>In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of El Segundo employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.</p> <p>The City of El Segundo is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives to build and sustain an environment that values diversity, welcomes opportunities to engage and understand others, and fosters a sense of belonging.</p>
