<p>Job Title: Special Education Assistant - 25-51; Educational Assistant- SPED I ; .75 FTE; Walker; Probationary Category: Support Staff</p> <p>Position Description</p> <p>JOB TITLE: Education Assistant - Special Education I; .75 FTE/ 6 hours per day; Probationary</p> <p>F.L.S.A. Regularly scheduled in a site-based classroom for four (4) hours or more per day. Performs duties with moderate supervision.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.</p> <ol> <li>Follows and maintains knowledge of applicable District policies and procedures. </li><li>Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (reading, math, and writing groups.) </li><li>Works directly with students with a variety of special needs. </li><li>Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts. </li><li>Assists students with tracking assignments and managing behaviors. </li><li>Tests and records students' abilities in math, writing, and reading and progress as directed by licensed staff member. </li><li>May be asked to clean up spills and wipe down tables in cafeteria when assigned supervision duty. </li><li>Monitors and assists students as needed in the classroom, at recess, at lunch, and at other places students gather. </li><li>Supervises large groups of children at recess and lunch ensuring safety and security at all times. </li><li>Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding, and toileting or diapering and restraint when necessary under direction of the teacher. </li><li>Assists with physical needs of students (carrying books, clearing access ways, etc.) </li><li>Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, recess, library, etc.). </li><li>Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data. </li><li>Models appropriate behavior in various social settings. </li><li>Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing. </li><li>Confers with teaching staff on progress of students. </li><li>Tests and evaluates students' abilities and progress as directed by teacher. </li><li>Performs clerical duties, checks notebooks, corrects papers, scores tests, and records grades. </li><li>Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance. </li><li>Assists with IEP meeting preparation. </li><li>Transports recess equipment outside, reports unsafe equipment and secures equipment when not in use. </li><li>Assists with loading and unloading students from buses. </li><li>Provide for the care, health, and safety of special education students. </li><li>Assists the teacher/special needs students with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, toilet, and clothing routines. </li><li>Assists the teacher in duties relating to supervision of playground, study hall, cafeteria, and bus loading activities. </li><li>Assists the licensed staff member in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.) </li><li>Implements daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of and planned by the licensed staff member. </li><li>Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the building administrator. </li><li>Assists the licensed staff member in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies. </li><li>Assists the licensed staff member in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork. </li><li>Assists the licensed staff member, when directed, in communicating with parents/guardians. </li><li>Obtains special training as directed to meet unique needs of assigned student(s). </li><li>Participates effectively at regular team meetings with licensed staff member and other support staff using appropriate social skills. </li><li>May administer medications or medical intervention within the scope of District policy(ies) and state and federal law, under the direction of licensed staff or building administrator. </li><li>Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students at all times. </li><li>Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor. </li><li>While working collaboratively with others, implements decisions within ASD established policies and procedures. </li><li>Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students and resolves conflict in a professional manner. </li><li>Works collaboratively with District and building administrators and other department staff to provide reliable service to customers. </li><li>Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff. </li><li>Participate as an effective team member. </li><li>Provide impeccable customer service. </li><li>Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner. </li><li>Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required. </li><li>Attends work regularly and is punctual. </li></ol> <p>MARGINAL DUTIES AND BESPONSIBILITIES Marginal duties ot this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.</p> <ol> <li>Assists oftice staff and licensed staff members as necessary including answering telephones, routing telephone calls or messages to appropriate staff and operating general office machinery including photocopy machine, compuler and fax machine. </li><li>Performs minor first aid in compliance with District policy(ies) and compleles required paperwork in a timely fashion. </li><li>Assists on school field trips as requested. </li><li>Files documents and records according to predetermined classifications, maintaining alphabetical index, and cross-reference Iiles. </li><li>Attends and participates in planning and in-service trainings. </li><li>Attends staff meetings. </li></ol> <p>SUPERVISOBY RESPONSIBILITIES All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.</p> <p>OUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able lo perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must meet current requirements prior to hire. Prior successful experience working in a school setting or clinical setting with physically aggressive students strongly preferred. . lnterpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under conlrol; remainlng open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with physically aggressive students. Ability to remain calm and in control despite multiple distractions. Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to eflectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small group situations to students and other school staff. Ability to verbally respond lo common inquiries from students. Abilily to read and interprel documents such as safety rules, operating and mainlenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. . Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal wilh problems involving several variables in a variety of situations Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, email, internet software, spreadsheets, and word processing software. Student information software strongly preferred. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant inlerruptions Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District including meeting current certification requirements. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card, Oregon Drivers License</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
