<p>Description</p> <p>To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the position satisfactorily. Tippecanoe County provides reasonable accommodations to qualified employees and applicants with known disabilities who require accommodation to complete the application process or perform essential functions of the job unless the accommodation would present an undue hardship.</p> <p>Incumbent serves as Juvenile Probation Officer Intake Supervisor for the Juvenile Probation Department, responsible for completing intakes on juveniles, supervising intake officers and related Department operations.</p> <p>DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li>Supervises assigned personnel, including interviewing, making hiring decisions, recommendations, orienting, job performance, planning, delegating, analyzing, controlling work assignments, establishing goals, training, developing, evaluating performance, making recommendation personnel actions, including promotions, transfers, and demotions, communicates/administers personnel programs/procedures, and informs supervisor and assigned staff of organizational developments. </li><li>Oversees assigned staff schedules including vacation and other time off. </li><li>Reviews necessary paperwork completed for court by assigned intake officers. </li><li>Completes intake procedures, processing juveniles. Conducts preliminary inquiry and investigations determining whether cases are handled informally or referred to court for formal handling. Provides for supervision and holding of juvenile until parent notification and pick up occurs. Conducts preliminary risk/needs, mental health, substance assessments, and obtains general intake information to assist in developing resolution to cases. </li><li>Contacts concerned parties and schedules detention and court hearings for juveniles. </li><li>Facilitates FAST Panels prior to Emergency Detention hearings based on rotating schedule. </li><li>Completes Emergency Detention Hearings on detained cases. </li><li>Monitors Informal Adjustment cases ensuring compliance with terms and conditions. Refers violations and failed cases to Prosecutor to initiate formal process as needed. Conducts random drug screening as required. Ensures clients pay required fees such as fines, court costs, and restitution. </li><li>Assists with home detention work as needed, conducting home detention intakes, checking juveniles in their homes, conducting room searches, administering alcohol sensor tests, and drug screening. </li><li>Completes Home Detention Quality Assurance audits and yearly assessments audits on Juvenile Intake staff. </li><li>Maintains knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal rules/regulations, new developments, technology, and trends, by reading professional publications and attending seminars and conferences. </li><li>Serves as representative on various task forces, committees, and/or teams as assigned and/or requested. </li><li>Prepares and makes public speaking presentation to community groups as assigned. </li><li>Performs related duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Requirements</p> <p>I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Baccalaureate Degree. Probation officer training is required. </li><li>Must be at least 21 years of age. </li><li>Possession of and ability to maintain Indiana Judicial Center and trainer for risk assessment certifications. </li><li>Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of local, state, and federal regulations and standard policies and procedures of juvenile and criminal code. </li><li>Working knowledge of court procedures within Tippecanoe County for juvenile residents. </li><li>Knowledge of standard filing systems, with ability to perform juvenile intakes and assessments. </li><li>Knowledge of principles and practices of behavioral assessment and intervention strategies and techniques, basic diagnostic and evaluation skills, crisis management, and treatment systems assessment. </li><li>Knowledge of and ability to assess cases of chemical dependency, substance abuse, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. </li><li>Knowledge and ability to enforce rules and regulations, resolve conflicts, respond to emergencies, and take authoritative action as situations demand. </li><li>Ability to supervise assigned personnel, including interviewing, making hiring decisions and recommendations, orienting, job performance, planning, delegating, analyzing, and controlling work assignments, establishing goals, training, developing, evaluating performance, making recommendation personnel actions, including promotions, transfers, and demotions, communicates/administers personnel programs/procedures, and informs supervisor and assigned staff of organizational developments. </li><li>Ability to oversee assigned staff schedules including vacation and other time off. </li><li>Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements. </li><li>Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. </li><li>Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons. </li><li>Ability to operate standard office equipment and probation equipment, including computer, typewriter, telephone, calculator, handcuffs, and taser. </li><li>Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with, but not limited to, co-workers, other County Departments, courts, law enforcement, attorneys, victims, juveniles and their families , community service providers, counselors, school systems, and members of the public being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities. </li><li>Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment. </li><li>Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure. </li><li>Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form. </li><li>Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things. </li><li>Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations. </li><li>Ability to perform arithmetic operations, compile, analyze, and develop data and facts. </li><li>Ability to testify in legal proceedings/court as needed. </li><li>Ability to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, evenings, and occasionally travel out of town. </li><li>Ability to respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis. </li><li>Possession of valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record. </li></ul> <p>II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:</p> <p>Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives. Work is reviewed primarily for soundness of judgment, technical accuracy, effect on Department goals and objectives, and compliance with Department policy and legal requirements.</p> <p>III. RESPONSIBILITY:</p> <p>Incumbent performs duties associated with supervising intake officers and Department operations and completing intakes on juveniles. Incumbent may establish procedures and performance standards and interpret Department policies. Incumbent refers to supervisor when interpretations of departmental policies, programs, and/or expenditures are thought necessary. Decisions are restricted by only the broadest polices and/or guidance from supervisor.</p> <p>IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:</p> <p>Incumbent maintains frequent contact with, co-workers, other County Departments, courts, law enforcement, attorneys, victims, juveniles and their families, community service providers, counselors, school systems, and members of the public for purposes of exchanging and explaining information.</p> <p>Incumbent reports directly to Juvenile Deputy Chief Probation Officer.</p> <p>V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>Incumbent performs the majority of duties in an office environment and courtroom, which involves sitting and walking at will, sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects under 25 pounds, driving, keyboarding, hearing sounds/communication, reaching/bending, handling/grasping objects, close/far vision, and depth perception.</p> <p>Incumbent works with or is exposed to violent/irate individuals and responds to situations involving potential harm to self and others.</p> <p>Incumbent occasionally works extended hours, weekends, evenings, and occasionally travels out of town. Incumbent responds to emergencies on 24-hour basis.</p>
