As a member of the NSHS Visitor Services team, this position is responsible for overseeing retail operations, ensuring a positive experience for visitors, and supervising the staff and volunteers in the gift shop.</p> <p>Key responsibilities include managing a team of staff and volunteers, overseeing shop inventory, and developing strategies to enhance customer service. The Gift Shop Attendant will work collaboratively with a dedicated group of professionals and volunteers to promote the missions and initiatives of the Nebraska State Historical Society. This role also involves fostering positive relationships with Capitol visitors and staff, helping to connect visitors to history through our gift shop offerings.</p> <p>Schedule: Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional events outside of these hours.</p> <p>The Nebraska State Historical Society serves as a statewide educational institution that connects people to the past through its library and research center, conservation facility, interpretive sites, and offices dedicated to state archaeology and historic preservation.</p> <p>Job duties</p> <ul> <li>Manage business operations for the Capitol Gift Store at the Nebraska State Capitol under the supervision of the Statewide Gift Shop Manager </li><li>Oversees front-end customer service. This includes daily operations such as opening and closing registers, greeting visitors, answering phones, promoting society programming, highlighting capitol and museum connections to merchandise, answering guest questions, and accepting payment for merchandise and services. </li><li>Supervises gift shop staff, volunteers, and work-study employees </li><li>Tracks daily gift shop attendance and transactions and reports numbers to appropriate staff. </li><li>Carries out opening and closing procedures including stock checks, ensuring phones and point-of-sale system are working properly, and follows proper cash-handling procedures. </li><li>Answers the phone and relays calls and messages in a timely manner. </li><li>Monitors gift shop security activity and reports Issues to appropriate parties. </li><li>Assists with restocking, and completing quarterly gift store inventory. </li><li>Receiving and checking in merchandise, merchandising displays, and coordinating store deliveries. </li><li>Maintains appearance and cleanliness of gift shop which Includes light housekeeping functions. </li><li>Managing the setup, tear down, and staffing of gift shop special events </li><li>Coordinates with staff, volunteers, and work-study students to ensure that the gift shop is adequately staffed </li><li>Communicate and enforce the gift shop policies and procedures. </li><li>Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification. </li></ul> <p>Requirements / Qualifications</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications: Coursework/Training or experience in customer assistance, public relations, event planning, sales, recreation, Nebraska history, supervision, or working directly with the public. OR Post high school coursework/training in social/behavioral science or business administration.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications: Fluency in Spanish.</p> <p>Other: This position requires travel.
