<p>NEWTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS</p> <p>Job Description</p> <p>Department:</p> <p>Teaching and Learning</p> <p>Job Title:</p> <p>Math Specialist</p> <p>FLSA Status:</p> <p>(Exempt/Non-exempt)</p> <p>Exempt, Unit A Part- time .6 School: TBD</p> <p>Reports to:</p> <p>Director for Math PK-12</p> <p>GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):</p> <p>The math specialist is responsible for helping every child in the school develop confidence and capacity in foundational mathematics concepts and skills. A Math Specialist provides and leads math instruction and assessment for the school, through a combination of educator coaching, providing student instruction and intervention, and coordination of assessment and tiered support services.</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>Required Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Certified through DESE Math 1-6 </li><li>SEI endorsement or additional license in ESL </li><li>Master's Degree in Education </li><li>Three or more years of recent experience teaching at the elementary level </li><li>Current knowledge of research and effective practices in the areas of MA Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics, including the content standards and standards for mathematical practice </li><li>Excellent interpersonal skills and flexible, responsive work style </li><li>Desired Qualifications: </li><li>Coaching experience </li><li>Familiarity and experience with a variety of mathematics assessments and interventions </li><li>NCTMs Principles to Actions and the eight Mathematics Teaching Practices administering, analyzing, and forming groups using mathematics universal screenings </li><li>Experience collaborating and problem-solving with teachers. </li><li>Experience and coursework in anti-racist, anti-bias instruction. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):</p> <ul> <li>Provide leadership for the school's mathematics program </li><li>Support professional learning by training, coaching, and supporting teachers and paraprofessionals with mathematics programs and equitable instructional practices </li><li>Support mathematics instruction by providing content expertise to staff in equitable practices and Newton's curriculum, facilitating data-driven discussions in grade-level meetings, and serving as a resource for culturally responsive mathematics instruction across the school community. </li><li>Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other professionals in planning instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners ? Provide and support mathematics assessment and data analysis </li><li>Provide direct instruction and intervention to students </li><li>Support math instruction and intervention during WIN blocks and small group instructional times; demonstrate flexibility to address broader academic needs that may emerge occasionally through ongoing student assessment and team collaboration. ? Plan and facilitate district professional learning at the school and district-level in collaboration with other specialists ? Regularly attend professional learning communities and professional learning with other specialists </li><li>Coordinate Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 mathematics support </li><li>Responsible for implementing "other job-related duties" as needed </li></ul> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Work Environment:</p> <p>Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Rarely absent or late unless the situation is of an emergency nature.</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job the teacher is frequently required to kneel, stoop, bend, and crouch. The teacher is periodically required to stand; while talking and listening.
