<p>Position Title:</p> <p>Academic Advisor I/II</p> <p>Job Group:</p> <p>Professional & Scientific</p> <p>Required Minimum Qualifications:</p> <p>Bachelor's degree</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts or science area or one of the college's curricular areas.</p> <p>Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, education, counseling, or LAS-related field.</p> <p>Experience advising, teaching, or counseling students in a professional setting.</p> <p>Experience using workplace technology or educational platforms (Outlook, Excel, Canvas, Navigate, Workday)</p> <p>Experience teaching or conducting large group workshops, presentations, seminars, or meetings.</p> <p>Job Description:</p> <p>The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences assigns academic advisors to six curriculum-based advising units: Biological & Physical Sciences, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Communication, Humanities, and Open Option. Advisors serve as integral members of their unit's team and may advise students across multiple majors within the unit.</p> <p>The college is seeking one Academic Advisor for the Communication and Humanities advising unit. This position may work with students majoring in Advertising, Communication Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Relations, Sports Media and Communication, and related programs.</p> <p>Successful candidates will:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Prioritize a student-centered approach to advising and thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.</p> </li><li> <p>Have experience teaching, advising, or counseling students from a variety of backgrounds in both one-on-one and group settings.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrate strong communication, organization, leadership, and time management skills.</p> </li></ul> <p>Key Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li> <p>Advise students on academic planning, degree requirements, university policies, and graduation progress.</p> </li><li> <p>Connect students to relevant campus resources such as counseling services, academic support, financial aid, and faculty mentorship.</p> </li><li> <p>Support or coordinate a learning community, which may include hiring, training, and supervising peer mentors and teaching an orientation or student success course.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in recruitment and orientation activities including individual and group visits, emails, phone calls, and program sessions.</p> </li><li> <p>Assist students in developing career goals in collaboration with faculty and career services professionals.</p> </li><li> <p>Contribute to college-wide student success and retention initiatives.</p> </li><li> <p>Serve on departmental committees, including in an advisory capacity to curriculum committees.</p> </li></ul> <p>If you're someone who genuinely cares about academic and student success, this position offers a unique and rewarding opportunity. If you enjoy building strong connections with students and creating a welcoming, supportive advising experience, you'll find this role both fulfilling and energizing.</p> <p>Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.</p> <p>Candidate may be hired as an Academic Advisor I or II, depending on experience.</p> <p>Level Guidelines: Academic Advisor I (Bachelor's degree)</p> <ul> <li>Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision </li><li>Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode </li><li>Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope </li><li>Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained </li><li>Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate </li><li>May lead projects of limited scope and complexity </li><li>May provide guidance to students </li></ul> <p>Level Guidelines: Academic Advisor II ( Bachelor's degree and 2 yrs related experience)</p> <ul> <li>Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals </li><li>Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues </li><li>Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems </li><li>Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests </li><li>May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff </li><li>May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity </li><li>Provides guidance to students </li></ul> <p>Appointment Type:</p> <p>Regular</p> <p>Number of Months Employed Per Year:</p> <p>12 Month Work Period</p> <p>Time Type:</p> <p>Full time</p> <p>Pay Grade:</p> <p>PS805</p> <p>Application Instructions:</p> <p>To apply for this position, please click on "Apply" and complete the Employment Application.
