<p>About Us</p> <p>Savannah State University established in 1890, is the first public historically black college or university in the state of Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's students select majors from five colleges:</p> <ul> <li>Business Administration </li><li>Education </li><li>Engineering and Computing </li><li>Media, Arts, and Communication </li><li>Science and Humanities </li></ul> <p>The campus is by far the most picturesque in the state of Georgia. The moss-laden sweeping oak trees, expansive marsh and historic architecture create a resplendent yet tranquil atmosphere. Beneath the beauty and splendor is a vibrant residential campus bursting at the seams with the vim and vigor of quality collegiate life: relevant academic majors, engaging lectures, cutting-edge research, quality student-faculty engagement and a nurturing environment.</p> <p>Job Summary</p> <p>This position is responsible for investigating assigned criminal cases to determine the nature of criminal activity, prevent or solve crimes, and identify and apprehend offenders. The Police Detective plays a key role in protecting the public and supporting judicial processes. Work may occur during the day or night, including weekends and holidays, and often outside standard business hours.</p> <p>NOTE: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Responds to crime scenes; receives reports from other department personnel; examines crime scenes to obtain clues and gather evidence; identifies, collects, marks and preserves physical evidence; takes videos and photographs; identifies and collects fingerprints. </li><li>Interviews or interrogates complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects and informants; obtains and receives signed statements; conducts undercover surveillance. </li><li>Analyzes criminal activity and evidence to develop leads, identify witnesses, and develop informant sources. </li><li>Writes and files reports on completed cases; details witness and testimony, occurrence of events, and criminal history of suspects; describes actions taken and results obtained. </li><li>Investigates known or suspected criminals or facts of particular cases to detect or deter criminal activity. </li><li>Obtains and serves criminal search and arrest warrants; obtains and serves subpoenas and motions. </li><li>Apprehends and arrests suspects. </li><li>Prepares, submits, and presents cases for prosecution; assists in developing court presentations; presents evidence and testimony in court. </li><li>Serves as a member of special task forces as assigned. </li><li>Coordinate investigations with other law enforcement agencies. </li><li>Performs the duties of a Patrol Officer; enforces local, state, and federal laws; assists motorists; issues citations and makes arrests. </li><li>Assists with the oversight of university camera systems and provide support for judicial and investigative purposes. </li><li>Responds to any and all emergency situations. </li><li>Performs administrative duties; employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, roll call and monthly reports. </li><li>Responds to complaints, provide direction to the officers on scene, and evaluate decisions. </li><li>Assist with coordination of CLERY Act Compliance. </li><li>Must be available for recall in emergency situations. </li><li>May be required to perform other job-related duties. </li><li>May perform patrol duties such as answering calls, investigating traffic accidents, patrolling the university to deter crimes and traffic violations, handling domestic disputes, and other misdemeanor and felony calls. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or GED equivalent </li><li>Georgia POST certification in good standing </li><li>Valid state issued driver's license in good standing </li><li>At least 1 year of law enforcement experience </li><li>Excellent customer service skills </li><li>High professional standards </li><li>Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution </li><li>At least 2 years of law enforcement experience </li><li>Experience with Clery Compliance and Title IX </li><li>Experience with trials and Court Proceedings </li><li>Criminal Investigation Certifications </li><li>Sexual Assault Investigation Training </li><li>Sexual Assault Investigation Certification </li><li>Experience with crime scenes and evidence collection </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic laws, city ordinances, and department policies and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of criminal investigation methods and search and seizure laws. </li><li>Knowledge of current law enforcement trends. </li><li>Knowledge of judicial process and criminal court procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of controlled substances and relevant laws and regulations. </li><li>Skill in crime scene processing methods used to collect and preserve evidence for court admissibility. </li><li>Skill in the use of photographic and surveillance equipment, audiovisual equipment, communications equipment and various types of emergency equipment. </li><li>Skill in operating a computer and standard office equipment. </li><li>Skill in observing and interpreting human behavior. </li><li>Skill in interview and interrogation techniques. </li><li>Skill in gathering, processing, recording and filing evidence. </li><li>Skill in interpersonal relations. </li><li>Skill in oral and written communications. </li><li>Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act. </li><li>Ability to carry duty belt, other weapons, and evidence equipment and sometimes lifting and/or carrying of tires, debris and of individuals in a rescue effort. </li><li>Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. </li><li>Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member. </li><li>Ability to make independent decisions solving problems, and meeting deadlines without supervision. </li></ul> <p>Apply Before Date</p> <p>Review of applications will begin upon receipt.
