Join our team as we help shape the future.</p> <p>The Director of State Tax leads the day-to-day operations of the State & Local Tax team which is responsible for all state, district, municipality and territory tax compliance, as well as reporting and planning for The Hartford's domestic insurance operations. The position is responsible for coordinating and reviewing various state tax types, including premium tax, income tax, state fund assessments, insurance surcharges, and other miscellaneous tax types. The position will also oversee various tax projects, planning initiatives, and automation strategies.</p> <p>The Director will have direct oversight of five to six tax professionals.</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Manage the day-to-day operations of The Hartford's State Tax Reporting and Compliance team.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee filing of state and local tax returns, including Premium, Income, Sales & Use Tax returns across all jurisdictions.</p> </li><li> <p>Manage the accounting and reporting for all state taxes paid across all jurisdictions.</p> </li><li> <p>Manage companies' responses to various notices received from jurisdictions throughout the year and support audit & controversy efforts.</p> </li><li> <p>Provide coaching and development opportunities to direct reports and managers.</p> </li><li> <p>Strategize and oversee state tax planning initiatives and projects. Based on required state tax knowledge provide value to enterprise initiatives including M&A, new business ventures, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Monitor state tax legislation across all 50 states, districts and territories for potential impacts to the Company, Interact with government affairs, business leaders and peer companies as we strategize proper responses to new legislation.</p> </li></ul> <p>Qualifications:</p> <p>The Director is expected to operate with minimal day-to-day supervision and function with a high degree of autonomy.? The Director must also offer the following:</p> <ul> <li> <p>10+ years of experience in state tax</p> </li><li> <p>Insurance experience is strongly preferred</p> </li><li> <p>In depth understanding of state and local tax laws and regulations</p> </li><li> <p>3+ years of experience managing a team of professionals</p> </li><li> <p>Excellent communication skills; ability to covey complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders</p> </li><li> <p>Understanding of financial reporting standards and practices</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to develop and implement tax strategies that align with organizational goals</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to identify and resolve tax related issues effectively and efficiently</p> </li><li> <p>Proficient with tax research tools and Microsoft Office Suite</p> </li><li> <p>Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting; CPA preferred</p> </li></ul> <p>Location:</p> <p>This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in The Hartford's Hartford, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).</p> <p>Compensation</p> <p>The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
