Job Description:

The Peer Tutor position is open to current OCC students. The main function of a tutor is to help students improve their academic performance. Peer tutors help other students understand key concepts in their coursework during individual or group tutoring sessions. An important role of the tutor is to help the student attain self-confidence by providing positive feedback, encouragement, and helpful tools to attain success in the course. Tutors do not provide answers, they guide the student towards independence and how they can attain the answer themselves.

Learning Center tutoring positions are "continuous recruitment." We accept tutor applications year-round and reach out to qualified applicants when the need for a tutor occurs. Need is based upon student demand in the specific course/discipline. This can change from semester to semester and sometimes even week to week. There is no guarantee of continued employment from semester to semester.

All tutoring positions are temporary and part-time (less than 29 hours per week). Applicants should be willing to work a minimum of 5 hours a week. The Learning Center is open seven days a week and offers day, evening, and weekend appointments for students (both in-person, and online). Your working hours will depend upon the number of students requiring tutoring in your subject area(s), your availability, and the hours that the Learning Center needs coverage.

As an OCC Learning Center tutor you may be asked to participate in training sessions towards attaining a College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certificate. This professional certificate is recognized and accepted at many other college institutions across the nation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

Subject Matter Knowledge

Patience

Positivity

Empathy

Confidentiality

Active Listening Skills

Problem-Solving Skills

Time Management Skills

Flexibility and Adaptability

Dependability

Willingness to Learn

Leadership Skills

Computer Skills

Cultural Sensitivity

Job Responsibilities:

Tutor students in course(s) that you have been approved to tutor.

Support students experiencing academic stress.

Help students understand core ideas and concepts presented in the course or textbook.

Provide friendly, courteous, and confidential service to every student you meet.

Provide students with positive feedback, patience, respect, and understanding as they learn.

Understand course requirements and coordinate with course instructors/departments.

Use a computer to follow a schedule of appointments and engage in tutoring.

Maintain up-to-date electronic reports on each tutoring session.

Maintain knowledge of materials available in the Learning Center.

Maintain familiarity with new materials and software programs used by students.

Cooperate in the ongoing activities of the Learning Center.

Participate in periodic tutor training and staff meetings.

Perform related work as required.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

No degree required, but must be a current OCC student in good standing.

Final grade of B+ (3.3 GPA) or higher in the course(s) you would like to tutor.

Overall Cumulative GPA of B (3.0 GPA) or higher.

Must include a recommendation from a professor or faculty member in the course/discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Can tutor multiple courses.

Have taken higher-level coursework in the discipline than that they wish to tutor.

Have prior experience working with students one-on-one or in small groups.

Have experience working with diverse populations including those learning the English language.

Have participated in College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification training.

Additional Information:

Rate of Pay: $15.00 per hour.

Application Instructions:

To be considered, please submit a resume and cover letter at time of application.

The three (3) references listed on the application must be professional references.

At least one reference (or letter of recommendation) needs to be from a professor or faculty member in the course/discipline.

Only the finalist's references will only be contacted, and after a final interview.

Please also include the following items to your electronic application:

In your cover letter, you must include:

The name of the course(s) you wish to tutor.

The days/times you are available to work.

The number of hours per week you are interested in tutoring (must be at least 5 hours).

Attach a copy of your final grades or college transcript.

Indicate if you are a current student and if you have any Federal Word Studies funds.
