No Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Salary Range: $$60,000 - $75,000</p> <p>Benefits Information: https://www.luc.edu/hr/benefits/</p> <p>The Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago invites nominations and applications for a Research Professor and a distinguished ophthalmologist-educator who will transform how future physicians learn ophthalmology through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive simulation technologies.</p> <p>This position recognizes a leader with a national or international reputation in ophthalmic education with immersive technology. The Chair will guide Stritch School of Medicine in building a cutting-edge, mission-aligned ecosystem for experiential learning that enhances diagnostic accuracy, clinical reasoning, surgical readiness, and compassionate patient care.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities</p> <p>Strategic Vision & Program Leadership</p> <ul> <li>Lead the development of a comprehensive VR/AR strategy for ophthalmology education across the undergraduate medical curriculum. </li><li>Collaborate with basic science, clinical, and interprofessional programs to embed immersive ophthalmic learning longitudinally. </li><li>Partner with Loyola Medicine, simulation centers, and community clinics to expand experiential learning opportunities in eye care. </li></ul> <p>Curriculum Innovation in Ophthalmology</p> <ul> <li>Design and implement VR/AR modules for core ophthalmic skills, including: </li><li>Basic eye examination and interpretation </li><li>Pupillary assessment and neuro-ophthalmic localization </li><li>Visual field interpretation and optic nerve evaluatiom </li><li>Develop assessment tools, competency-based evaluations using immersive technologies. </li><li>Support faculty adoption through training, consultation, and best-practice dissemination. </li></ul> <p>Research & Scholarship</p> <ul> <li>Conduct high-impact research in ophthalmic education, immersive learning, simulation science, or related fields. </li><li>Secure external funding to support innovation, infrastructure, and interdisciplinary collaboration. </li><li>Mentor faculty, residents, and students in scholarly work related to VR/AR and ophthalmology. </li></ul> <p>Technology, Infrastructure & Innovation</p> <ul> <li>Oversee development of immersive ophthalmology labs, VR/AR platforms, and digital ecosystems. </li><li>Evaluate emerging technologies for scalability and alignment with Stritch's mission and accreditation standards. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Terminal degree (MD, MD/PhD ). </li><li>Distinguished record of scholarship and innovation in ophthalmology, medical education, immersive learning, or simulation. </li><li>Demonstrated leadership in academic medicine or health professions education. </li><li>Experience designing, implementing, or evaluating VR/AR or simulation-based ophthalmic educational programs. </li></ul> <p>Physical Demands None Working Conditions None Minimum Education and/or Work Experience</p> <ul> <li>Terminal degree (MD, MD/PhD ). </li><li>Distinguished record of scholarship and innovation in ophthalmology, medical education, immersive learning, or simulation. </li><li>Demonstrated leadership in academic medicine or health professions education. </li><li>Experience designing, implementing, or evaluating VR/AR or simulation-based ophthalmic educational programs. </li></ul> <p>Open Date 02/25/2026 Close Date Salary Range $60,000 - $75,000 Additional Salary Information</p> <p>This salary range is for a 12-month academic appointment.
