You'll get the opportunity to be involved with the design of a variety of highway projects from maintenance to new construction, all while working with a variety of groups from environmental, to construction, to local entities. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.</p> <p>Hwy Designer III Pay Range: $27.346 - $40.311 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.</p> <p>JOB DUTIES</p> <ul> <li>Under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, you will be part of a team designing highway construction projects. </li><li>Be part of a team which designs highway construction projects including asphalt overlay and reconstruction. </li><li>You and the team will design roadway features including horizontal and vertical alignment, intersections, driveways, sidewalks, curb ramps, drainage, cross-sections, earthwork, guardrail and other features. </li><li>Participate in the design of erosion control features and implementation of environmental processes. </li><li>You will be instructed on hydrologic/hydraulic analysis for the design of culverts and storm sewers. </li><li>Drawing roadway features, culvert and storm sewer cross-section plans, and various design details. You and the team will prepare preliminary and final construction project quantities and cost estimates. </li><li>Contribute to project related papers which document project decisions. </li><li>Join in project related meetings, including field inspections and coordination meetings with various divisions and stakeholders including city, county, and utility personnel. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Requirements / Qualifications</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Highway Designer II: Coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction field using CADD applications and practices. </li><li>Highway Designer III: Three years of experience in highway civil engineering design, including CADD applications and practices OR post high school coursework or training in the design field mentioned above may substitute for two of the three years of experience required on a year-for-year basis. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Graduation from a recognized two year vocational engineering school. </li><li>Experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans. </li><li>Experience and knowledge in engineering principles related to design and construction of projects including roadway design, surveying, hydrology, hydraulics, geometrics, cost estimation, and highway construction and inspection. </li><li>Experience in MicroStation, GEOPAK/ORD, and PC based drafting, roadway, earthwork, drainage, word processing and spreadsheet programs </li></ul> <p>Other:</p> <ul> <li>Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation. </li><li>Occasional overnight travel is possible. </li><li>Regular and reliable attendance is required. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects. </li><li>Proficiency of the most current versions of at least one of the following design software is required: Micro Station, AUTO CADD, or other related design CADD software platforms. </li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is required. </li><li>Familiar with NDOT's Roadway Design Manual, NDOT Roadway Design standards, and Nebraska Standard Specifications for Highway Construction.
