<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Special Education Teacher</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>Under the supervision of the Director of Special Services, the Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The role supports academic achievement, social-emotional growth, communication, behavioral regulation, executive functioning, adaptive skills, and student access across educational settings.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <ul> <li>Provide specialized instruction aligned with student IEP goals in individual, small group, inclusive, and specialized settings. </li><li>Develop, implement, monitor, and revise IEPs in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements. </li><li>Participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings and collaborate with staff, families, related service providers, and outside agencies. </li><li>Conduct educational assessments, curriculum-based measures, progress monitoring, and evaluation activities. </li><li>Implement accommodations, modifications, behavior intervention plans, transition supports, executive functioning supports, and other IEP services. </li><li>Support transition planning and services as required by law. </li><li>Collect and analyze student performance data to guide instruction and monitor progress toward IEP goals. </li><li>Collaborate with general education staff and related service providers to support access to the general education curriculum within the least restrictive environment (LRE). </li><li>Utilize positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices. </li><li>Maintain accurate special education records, compliance documentation, service logs, and data using CTSEDS and other district systems. </li><li>Support students' social-emotional, behavioral, communication, adaptive, and functional needs. </li><li>Utilize assistive technology, instructional technology, and educational software to support learning. </li><li>Maintain ongoing communication with families regarding student progress and programming. </li><li>Coordinate with community agencies and service providers as appropriate. </li><li>Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and other applicable laws. </li><li>Participate in professional development and remain current in instructional practices, behavioral supports, and special education regulations. </li><li>Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and support new staff as appropriate. </li><li>Select and maintain instructional materials, supplies, and equipment. </li></ul> <p>Additional Duties</p> <p>Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services, building administration, or designee.</p> <p>Equipment & Travel</p> <p>Utilizes standard office, instructional, assistive, and educational technology. Ability to travel between district buildings and professional meetings as required.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of special education practices, differentiated instruction, behavior management, and evidence-based interventions. </li><li>Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, Connecticut special education regulations, IEP development, progress monitoring, and CTSEDS compliance. </li><li>Ability to develop specialized instruction aligned with student needs and curriculum standards. </li><li>Ability to analyze educational data and apply data-driven decision making. </li><li>Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and technology skills. </li><li>Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional judgment. </li></ul> <p>Physical Demands</p> <p>Work is performed in standard school and office environments and requires mobility, standing, sitting, communication, and interaction with students and staff throughout the workday.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>Certification/License:</p> <p>Valid Connecticut State Department of Education certification with one or more of the following endorsements preferred or required depending on assignment:</p> <ul> <li>165 Comprehensive Special Education, Grades K-12 </li><li>265 Comprehensive Special Education, Grades PK-12 </li></ul> <p>Additional cross endorsements or specialized certifications preferred.</p> <p>Education:</p> <p>Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field required; Master's degree preferred.</p> <p>Experience:</p> <p>Experience working with students with disabilities, IEP development, progress monitoring, inclusive practices, behavioral supports, multidisciplinary collaboration, and CTSEDS preferred.</p> <p>Equal Opportunity Employer</p> <p>North Stonington Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of any protected status under applicable law.</p>
