<p>Description</p> <p>The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is seeking a WWTP Operator-in-Training to join our team.</p> <p>Under guidance and direction of the WWTP Operations Supervisor or WWTP Lead Operator, in a training capacity, learns and assists with the operation, maintenance and repair of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and related facilities and equipment.</p> <p>The Operator-in-Training will complete part of the training on different shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The routine schedule will be determined after training is complete. The routine shift will be an eight (8) hour shift of 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., or 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. It will consist of one (1) weekend day, Tuesday through Sunday or Sunday through Tuesday. Overtime may also be required, and you may be required to work outside of assigned hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.</p> <p>Our employees are required to reside within 30 miles of the City of Sioux City limits which extends to other adjoining states: Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.</p> <p>Required Qualifications:</p> <p>Graduation from standard high school or GED. Experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery and experience in a water or wastewater facility preferred.</p> <p>or</p> <p>Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.</p> <p>Preferred:</p> <p>Experience in water or wastewater facility preferred.</p> <p>Special Requirements:</p> <p>Must possess a valid driver's license throughout length of employment.</p> <p>Must obtain an Iowa Grade 1 Wastewater Operator Certificate within twenty-four (24) months of hire, and progress to higher-grade certifications within the required time limit given, or</p> <p>Alternatively, an equivalent level of certification issued by another state may be accepted with written proof from the state of Iowa that such certification is transferable to the State of Iowa.</p> <p>Duties</p> <ul> <li>Learns to operate WWTP and wastewater systems including but not limited to: (Modified Ludzack-Ettinger treatment plant, in-plant lift stations, settling tanks, digesters, centrifuges, bar screens, etc.) to provide compliance with applicable state and federal regulations; conducts routine inspections of all related facilities and equipment. </li><li>Learns to operate, monitor, and adjust the Renewable Fuels facility under the direction of the Utilities Program Manager. </li><li>Operates, monitors and adjusts chemical dosage control. </li><li>Inspects all equipment and process areas. </li><li>Collects wastewater samples and conducts field tests and analysis to maintain proper quality control. </li><li>Performs maintenance and repair work on plant facilities, pumps, and related equipment. </li><li>Monitors facility and equipment to identify and report/repair any malfunctions. </li><li>Reviews recorded data and verbal reports from crew and previous shift. </li><li>Takes and records system operation readings according to prescribed schedules. </li><li>Maintains daily logs, records plant operating data as required in logs and operations software. </li><li>Helps a high-level operator performs maintenance of the wastewater system including maintaining and calibrating hand-held and on-line monitoring equipment and treatment equipment as required. </li><li>Follows City's and Iowa Department of Natural Resource's environmental, health and safety policies and reports unsafe conditions to supervisor. </li><li>Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours; may be required to work evenings, weekends and holiday when the interests of the employer require. </li><li>Performs general housekeeping / janitorial duties. </li><li>Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in the state of a declared emergency. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.</p> <p>Job Knowledge: Requires a general knowledge of treatment processes that may include: screenings, grit removal, clarification, activated sludge, anaerobic digestion and solids handling, disinfection, septage, and chemical handling. Requires a general knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machinery and related mechanical equipment, the overall pumping and wastewater treatment process and system, computer skills and related software, laboratory equipment and water quality testing. Prepare and maintain accurate paperwork such as records, log orders, surveys, and routine reports as directed. Perform standardized water process control, monitoring, and compliance sampling and testing. Ability to read meters, gauges and charts, and maintain routine records; operate pumps and hand tools.</p> <p>Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills. Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and staff, business representatives and the general public.</p> <p>Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms and/or legs; ability to work different shifts, capability to work more than eight hours as needed, also may be required to work overtime; may be needed to work holidays, weekends, and fill in for other operators who are absent from work; regular schedule may include weekends, evenings and/or nights.</p> <p>Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.</p> <p>Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in certain areas of the work environment is usually loud.</p> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications</p> <p>Must possess a valid driver's license.
