<p>General Description</p> <p>Heavy Duty:</p> <p>Performs independent advanced skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of specialized heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, fire/rescue, sanitation vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor and the Chief Mechanic.</p> <p>Essential Job Functions</p> <ul> <li>Heavy Duty Mechanic II: Inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of independent skilled repair and reconditioning of diversified heavy-duty equipment, with an emphasis on specialized heavy equipment. </li><li>Performs preventive maintenance with special attention given to assure the safety of vehicles and to eliminate premature equipment failure. </li><li>Performs installation and repair of emergency lighting systems, cameras, sirens, and other specialized equipment, including wiring and electrical system troubleshooting. </li><li>Performs welding and fabrication work as required. </li><li>Performs installation and minor repair of communication radios. </li><li>Performs trouble shooting of computerized engine control systems. </li><li>Utilizes Fleet Management Software to record repairs, parts used, and labor expended per work order. </li><li>Performs emergency road service to equipment outside garage including being available off-hours in case of emergencies. </li><li>Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Monitors inventory of department equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies. </li><li>Provides guidance and assistance to customers as needed. </li><li>Oversees work and training of lower-level Fleet Management staff. </li></ul> <p>(These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned, including City-directed work assignments in the event of a declared emergency.)</p> <p>Knowledge/Skills/Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices associated with automobiles, fire/rescue, sanitation, law enforcement and other specialized vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Knowledge of the principals and operation of internal combustion engines. </li><li>Knowledge of automotive and emergency lighting and electrical systems. </li><li>Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures. </li><li>Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. </li><li>Skilled in using computers for data entry, word processing and accounting purposes. </li><li>Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. </li><li>Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing. </li><li>Ability to use various types of computer software. </li><li>Ability to provide personal tools, as required. </li><li>Ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems associated with all types of equipment with an emphasis on specialized heavy equipment in a timely, cost-effective manner. </li><li>Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. </li></ul> <p>The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <p>Working Conditions:</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to changing goals, priorities, and needs.</p> <p>Work typically requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).</p> <p>Risk/Safety Conditions:</p> <p>This position requires frequent exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.)</p> <p>Physical Activities:</p> <p>The work is moderate: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force to move objects and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additional requirements include balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.</p> <p>Position requires the operation of a City vehicle.</p> <p>(Occasional=1-3 Hrs.; Frequent=3-5 Hrs.; Constant=5-8 Hrs. - Per Workday)</p> <p>Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred. </li><li>Four (4) years of work experience in the diagnoses, maintenance, and repair of automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment. Experience in the installation of communication and specialized emergency equipment preferred. </li><li>Four (4) years of work experience in the diagnoses, maintenance, and repair of light-duty automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, and landscape maintenance/field maintenance equipment. Experience in the installation of communication and specialized emergency equipment preferred. </li></ul> <p>(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)</p> <p>Licenses and Certifications:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Possession of a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire. Possession of a Florida Class B Driver's License is preferred, CDL License within 1 year or at the next city offered session.</p> </li><li> <p>Forklift within 90 days or at next offered class.</p> </li><li> <p>Possession of any combination of current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications or Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications is preferred.</p> </li></ul> <p>Emergency Response Responsibility</p> <p>Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description.
