<p>Job Responsibilities</p> <p>At Sumter Maintenance, operates medium sized equipment on the shoulder/ditching crew to include a tandem dump truck for hauling materials to and from the job site, such as asphalt, soil, pipe, debris, and other construction materials. Operates medium equipment such as a belt loader and large roller during various phases of roadway maintenance. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges to include work on shoulders, re-grading and cleaning ditches, cleaning drainage structures, repairing/constructing drainage structures and laying sideline/cross line pipes. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools such as chain saw, weed eater, power drill, leaf blower, asphalt tamper, etc in various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger when needed to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Operates front end loader to load materials from yard for hauling to job site to use in various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates pipe washer during various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates a standard dump truck with a snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from the highways and bridges, also assists with other emergencies as needed.</p> <p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p> <p>Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.</p> <p>The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
