<p>This position performs region-wide sign shop activities such as fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs and special pavement marking. Additionally, this position performs bridge/culvert maintenance activities involved in repairing substructure and superstructure of concrete and steel and maintenance on the twin 8000 ft. long, 150 ft. high Zilwaukee Bridge. Perform roadside activities including spraying pesticide, planting, trimming, and removal of trees and shrubs and performing maintenance activities at all roadside parks and rest areas and assisting Region Electricians in the maintenance and/or installation of energized traffic devices. During the winter, duties will continue but may include working at one of the Bay Region highway maintenance garages performing snow/ice removal and related road maintenance. Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., snowplow) when performing maintenance activities.</p> <p>The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experience (E8) level. Recognized on the international stage for fostering positive employee engagement, the State of Michigan is a past recipient of a North America Government Agency Employees Engagement Award.</p> <p>Education</p> <p>Education typically acquired through completion of high school.</p> <p>Experience</p> <p>Transportation Maintenance Worker 6</p> <p>No specific type or amount of experience is required.</p> <p>Transportation Maintenance Worker 7</p> <p>One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.</p> <p>Transportation Maintenance Worker E8</p> <p>Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.</p> <p>To be considered for this position you must: </p> <ul> <li>Transportation Maintenance Worker Recruit: Possess a Commercial Learner's Permit upon appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position. </li><li>Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position. </li><li>Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program. </li><li>Possess a Commercial Core Pesticide Applicator certification as well as categories 3A (Turfgrass Pesticide Management), 3B (Ornamental Pesticide Management), 5 (Aquatic Pesticide </li></ul> <p> Management), & 6 (Right-of-Way Pesticide Management) from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.</p> <p>View the classification specification at: https://www.michigan.gov/mdcs/-/media/Project/Websites/mdcs/JOBSPECS/T/TransportationMaintenanceWorker.pdf</p> <p>MDOT does not participate in E-Verify and does not sponsor visa applications.</p> <p> All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test and physical (if applicable) prior to their actual appointment.
