Consider before submitting an application:

This position is expected to start around January 2026 and continue through the Winter/Spring term (ending approximately May 2026) or continuing into Summer 2026 if available and there is an opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships.

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

Internship Program at Tesla

The Internship Recruiting Team is driven by the passion to recognize and develop emerging talent. Our year-round program places the best students in positions where they will grow technically, professionally, and personally through their experience working closely with their Manager, Mentor, and team. We provide an experience that allows the intern to experience life at Tesla by including them in projects that are critical to their team's success.

Multiple Locations Possible: Palo Alto, CA; Fremont, CA; Austin, TX

Your application for the Cell Engineer, Cell Engineering Internship will be considered across all opportunities for the teams listed below:

Cell Materials

The Cell Materials Engineering team leads the design, qualification, and test method development of cathode, anode, and electrolyte. The team is responsible for the implementation of Tesla's cell materials technology roadmap from development to product-ready. Interns will be responsible for managing material program scope, identifying program risks, and driving program key decision making and facilitate cross-functional alignments

Cell Development

The Cell Development Lab serves to prototype next generation materials, electrodes, and cells for Tesla's future electric vehicle and energy storage products. Interns on this team will help in development of Automated Cell prototype Line equipment and processes to rapidly and reliably produce cells to qualify Tesla's future battery cell materials and electrodes. They will drive improvements to improve Cpk, reduce turnaround time, and improve OEE of the line

Cell Modeling

The cell modeling team generate cell lifetime models to predict aging characteristics based on large datasets generated from our test labs. Interns on this team will process test data and optimize model parameters to best predict cell lifetime at different scenarios for electric vehicles and energy storage products. They will translate degradation mechanisms into mathematical representations that can be accommodated by existing models. As an intern, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with our team of engineers and researchers to design and execute experiments, develop test methods, and analyze the behavior of cells. You'll be an integral part of our team, contributing to the development of innovative solutions that drive our company's success.

Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Chemical, Electrical Engineering or a related field

Experience with SolidWorks, Python, Catia, CAD/AutoCAD, Revit, 3DX or other 3D modelling software

Experience using MATLAB/Simulink for modeling physical systems

Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology and electrochemistry

Participated in research within the battery or cell material field

Expertise with analysis and/or qualification of lithium-ion cell materials including cathode, anode, electrolyte, etc.

Knowledge of data visualization tools, such as Matplotlib or Plotly

First-principle physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and thermo-fluids engineering
