<p>JOB DESCRIPTION: A full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track, benefits-eligible position. The primary assignment is teaching undergraduate composition majors, undergraduate elective composition courses, and graduate-level music composition courses. Individual composition lessons will make up part of the load. The usual teaching load will be three three-credit classes each semester (or equivalent), with an expectation in research and a reasonable contribution in service. Participation in School of Music activities, recruitment and retention of students, and faculty governance is required. Creative/Scholarly activity appropriate for achieving a national or international reputation as a composer is required. Active participation in scholarly organizations in the field is expected.</p> <p>DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2025 (Classes begin August 20, 2025)</p> <p>THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC (music.wvu.edu) brings together musicians and scholars from across the nation and the world in a vibrant musical community dedicated to fostering excellence, creativity, and innovation in the arts and humanities. It is the flagship music institution in the state, located about an hour's drive from Pittsburgh and about three hours by car from Baltimore or Washington, D.C. Housed in the multi-million-dollar Creative Arts Center, the School of Music comprises over 300 music majors, 33 full-time and several part-time faculty and is the only fully accredited music unit in the state of West Virginia that offers BA, BM, BS, MM, MA, and DMA degree programs in music. Music faculty members can benefit from an active professional development program and travel grants sponsored by the College of Creative Arts & Media. The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Therapy Program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association, and the Music Education Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the West Virginia Department of Education.</p> <p>The College of Creative Arts and Media has over 2,000 students. It comprises four professionally accredited and nationally recognized Schools of Art & Design, Media & Communications, Music, and Theatre & Dance. Each School offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees addressing such fields as the creative and performing arts, advertising and communications, arts education and scholarship, design disciplines, journalism, marketing, and public relations, museum studies, the recording industry, theatre technology, and the intersection of art and health.</p> <p>West Virginia University is classified as a Doctoral/Research University-extensive and is the state's only comprehensive doctoral-granting land grant institution. We seek a creative, dynamic composer with significant professional experience in media scoring (e.g., film, television, online media, video games) and/or popular songwriting. Candidates with experience using adaptive audio tools such as Wwise and FMOD are preferable. A Master's in Composition is the minimum degree required for this position, although a Doctorate is preferred. The School of Music seeks a candidate who will demonstrate exemplary communication skills, collegiality, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the University.</p> <p>DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin immediately.
