Our mission is to empower students through educational excellence and experiential learning as we pursue knowledge, share our research and artistry, and engage communities for the benefit of the region, state, nation and world.</p> <p>Under general direction of Plumber Foreman or designee, the Pipefitter performs skilled work in the trade of a Pipefitter, including by not limited to installation, maintenance and repair of water piping systems, steam piping systems, and plumbing fixtures in accordance with recognized procedures and techniques common to the trade of Pipefitter.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>The Pipefitter reports to the Pipefitter Foreman or designee. This individual receives written and oral instructions for the execution of their duties. This individual also interacts with other Physical Plant staff, Heating Plant staff, Grounds staff, Building Services staff, Residential Facilities, Support staff, outside contractors and vendors.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Onsite Work Duties</p> <ul> <li>Perform journeyman-level work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe, high-and/or low-steam piping, heating water lines and condensate piping systems in all University structures and grounds </li><li>Cut, thread, and hammer pipe to specification, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, and pipe threaders and benders </li><li>Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints </li><li>Attach pipes to walls, structures and fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools or welding equipment </li><li>Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipelines, using pressure gauge brackets, clamps, tools or welding equipment </li><li>Measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading </li><li>Lay out full scale drawing of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment, following blueprints </li><li>Plant pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications </li><li>Select pipe sizes and types and related materials, such as supports, and hangers, according to specifications </li><li>Modify, clean, and maintain pipe systems, units, fittings and related machines and equipment, flowing specifications and using hand and power tools </li><li>Turn off steam, water, or gas from pipe section </li></ul> <p>Shop Duties and Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Use saws, cutting torches, and pipe benders and/or specialized tools of the trade to cut and hammer pipes to specification </li><li>Perform other shop duties as assigned </li><li>Maintain shop safety rules and procedures </li><li>Clean shop equipment and work areas upon complication of work </li></ul> <p>Project Duties</p> <ul> <li>Provide assistance during renovation of existing or on large scale construction projects and other strategic initiatives </li><li>Plan, lay out, assemble and install materials, equipment and piping as required by scope of work </li><li>Remain familiar with project costs and cost tracking </li><li>Follow cost-of-work practices with the budget </li></ul> <p>Scheduled Preventative Maintenance</p> <ul> <li>Perform scheduled preventative maintenance task as scheduled through work management system (TMA) and assigned by Plumbing shop Foreman designee </li></ul> <p>Additional Duties</p> <ul> <li>Assist with after-hours and weekend emergency "Call-Back" to supervise and/or perform repair jobs </li><li>Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches </li><li>Prepare parts list for Plumbing shop Foreman or designee </li><li>Retrieve parts and/or supplies for Material Distribution Center </li></ul> <p>Other Duties as Assigned</p> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>Certificate of completion of Pipetrade apprenticeship under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program.</p> <ul> <li>OR - </li></ul> <p>Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Pipefitter or other Pipetrade classification with a minimum of five (5) years (60 months) of actual work in the trade, which may have included apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Pipefitters, Pipefitter Welders, Refrigeration Mechanics, Temperature Control Mechanics, Sprinkler Fitters, and/or Oil Burner Mechanics.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge and ability to perform manual labor or mechanical operations (construction, installation, repair, and maintenance) customarily performed in the pipefitter trade. </li><li>Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. </li><li>Design- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and model. </li><li>Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications. </li><li>Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly. </li><li>Complex Problem Solving - Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. </li><li>Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems. </li><li>Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. </li><li>Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. </li><li>Installation - Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications. </li><li>Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing so others will understand. </li><li>Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. </li><li>Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. </li><li>Ability to independently interact with clients and the public in a friendly, positive manner to achieve customer satisfaction including effectively resolving customer concerns. </li></ul> <p>Specialty Factors (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li>Valid Illinois Driver's License </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>None</p> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Additional Requirements (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Physical demands/requirements</p> <ul> <li>Perform physical labor on construction and maintenance work where skill and experience are required </li><li>Ability to lift 75 pounds </li><li>Work at heights or depths of at least 30 feet or more </li><li>Must be able to work underground, in ceilings and in confined spaces and be able to maneuver and carry equipment to those locations </li><li>Must be able to speak clearly </li><li>Visual acuity to differentiate between color-coded piping </li><li>Ability to bend, crouch, kneel and reach overhead </li><li>Usually in and out of heated and protected areas; but, occasionally exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow, etc. </li></ul>
