Salary schedule can be found at ssd2.org</p> <p>FLSA Status: Non-Exempt</p> <p>Work Calendar: 200 Day</p> <p>POSITION SUMMARY:</p> <p>The School Nurse provides a comprehensive approach by working to promote a healthy school environment, identifying both actual and potential health problems and by providing case management services. The School Nurse collaborates with educators, school officials, students, and families to ensure students respond positively to their environment and achieve healthy learning through physical, emotional, mental and social health.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Develops plans for student care based on assessments, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care of children with chronic health concerns and children with special needs. </li><li>Monitors immunizations, manages communicable disease/infection control measures, and assesses the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety. </li><li>Oversees creation and maintenance of individual student health records in accordance with district policy. </li><li>Coordinates and participates in hearing and vision screenings as mandated by the Colorado Department of Education. </li><li>Communicates individual student health needs to school staff on a "need to know" basis by following student confidentiality in accordance with district policy. </li><li>Skillfully handles the emergency care of acutely ill or injured individuals. </li><li>Oversees and coordinates all health services-related school staff trainings such as medication administration, standard precautions, CPR/AED/First Aid, concussion management and disease prevention. </li><li>Pursues continuous professional growth and self-renewal in education. </li><li>Follows district personnel policies and procedures. </li><li>Maintains and submits accurate and complete records as determined by administration and nursing team. </li><li>Assumes responsibility for assigned duties and attends required meetings at designated times. </li><li>Demonstrates willingness to make contributions beyond the scope of job when appropriate or necessary. </li><li>Provides interventions and education in areas such as acute and chronic illness, adolescent pregnancy, communicable diseases, dental disease, injuries and emergencies, mental health, nutrition, obesity, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse. </li><li>Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with students, parents, and community and assists families with locating outside care/resources. </li><li>Communicates effectively with students, parents, and staff about student health concerns. </li><li>Communication and actions are open and collaborative with administrators, staff and colleagues. </li><li>Works collaboratively and supervises health assistants to provide delegated health services to students, to include medication administration, first aid and other assigned health assistant duties. </li><li>Ensures health assistants are competent in performing all health room management tasks. </li><li>Contributes and collaborates with school administration on the health assistant evaluation process. </li><li>Provides support and health advice to Special Education, MTSS, and 504 teams. </li><li>Serves as consultant with other school professionals/departments such as nutrition services, transportation, counselors, physical education/coaches, teachers, and administrators. </li><li>Ensures monthly submission of Medicaid billing for billable student health services. </li><li>Other duties as assigned or requested. </li><li>Attending all meetings as scheduled. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree plus additional coursework required for certification or licensure </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>Minimum of one year experience in: Pediatric nursing, community or public health nursing or school nursing </li></ul> <p>PREFERRED EDUCATION, FORMAL TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>3-5 years experience as a school nurse preferred </li></ul> <p>LICENSES & CERTIFICATION:</p> <ul> <li>Active Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Registered Nurse (RN) license; required at entry </li><li>Currently hold a CDE Special Skills Provider license or have licensure application in process with appropriate endorsement in: School Nurse 0-21 </li><li>Current CPR/AED/First Aid certifications from a nationally recognized program of instruction; required at entry </li><li>Requires a valid Colorado driver's license </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE & OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal relation skills. </li><li>Customer service and public relations skills. </li><li>Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. </li><li>Organizational skills. </li><li>Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks with frequent interruptions. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. </li><li>Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. </li><li>Ability to perform responsibilities without the necessity of close supervision. </li><li>Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and common software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. </li></ul> <p>EQUIPMENT & VEHICLES USED:</p> <ul> <li>Computer with email and EMR (electronic medical record) ability </li><li>Fax/scanner/copier </li><li>Cell phone and desk phone </li></ul> <p>SUPERVISORY DUTIES:</p> <p>The school nurse is responsible for the legal and clinical supervision of delegated healthcare tasks, which is distinct from administrative supervision by a school administrator.</p> <ul> <li>Delegation and Training: The school nurse is the only licensed person who can train and delegate specific nursing tasks (e.g., medication administration, blood glucose monitoring, G-tube feeding) to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs), such as health paraprofessionals or other designated school staff, in compliance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act. </li><li>Oversight and Evaluation: Responsibilities include supervising the performance of these delegated tasks, ensuring appropriate documentation, reviewing the UAP's competency, and evaluating the health outcomes of the delegated care. </li><li>Guidance and Consultation: Serve as the primary health consultant for school personnel, providing professional health leadership and in-service training on health-related topics, emergency responses, and standard safety practices. </li><li>Program Coordination: Assist in coordinating school-wide health programs, including mandated screenings (vision, hearing, immunization surveillance), and assist administrators in developing related health policies and emergency response plans. </li><li>Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of all training and delegation activities, including dates and nature of supervision and ongoing instruction. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Strength and Mobility:</p> <ul> <li>Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the school environment (may involve walking long distances within a complex). </li><li>Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting a student, moving medical equipment, handling supplies). </li><li>Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and twist at the waist to perform patient care, including performing CPR or assisting a student from the floor. </li><li>Ability to use upper body strength for tasks such as performing chest compressions during CPR or physically restraining a patient if necessary. </li></ul> <p>Dexterity and Senses:</p> <ul> <li>Sufficient manual dexterity to operate medical equipment (syringes, pumps, monitors) and standard office equipment (computer, phone). </li><li>Adequate vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception) to assess student health conditions (e.g., skin color changes, rashes), read labels, monitor screens, and observe students from a distance. </li><li>Adequate hearing to auscultate heart, lung, and bowel sounds; take blood pressure; and hear student/staff verbalizations and emergency signals. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Environment: Work is primarily performed within a school health office and general school environment (classrooms, gymnasium, playground), which typically has a moderate noise level. </li><li>Exposure: The position involves potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids (bloodborne pathogens), and occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals or other fumes/airborne particles. </li><li>Hazards: May involve working near moving mechanical parts (e.g., wheelchairs, specialized equipment) and navigating potential slippery floors. The nurse must be aware of occupational hazards and follow standard safety practices. </li><li>Mental Demands: The role requires awareness and the ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies, manage a high volume of varied tasks, and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. </li></ul>
