The Area Coordinator for First Year Students manages and executes a first-year residential experience program that facilitates new students' successful transition to college and on-campus living. The Area Coordinator for First Year Students provides day to day supervision to all first-year student residence halls (approximately 500 students), 2 part-time graduate hall directors, and overall supervision of first year Resident Assistants. The Area Coordinator for First Year Students will collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to support the vision and strategy for first year student success, contributing to a co-curricular educational experience that complements Rhode Island College's curriculum and promotes student engagement and leadership development. They will collaborate with faculty, counselors, other qualified professionals, and college staff to provide resources and interventions that promote student achievement. In addition, the primary goal of the Area Coordinator for First Year Students is to retain current students by purposefully inspiring and strategizing to raise first-year students' experience. The Area Coordinator for First Year Students serves in a professional on call rotation, and provide crisis intervention support to on-call staff.</p> <p>Essential Duties</p> <ul> <li>Supervise first-year residential living areas of approximately 500 students. </li><li>Live-in position in a first year residence hall. </li><li>Supervise part-time first year graduate hall directors. Select, train, supervise, and evaluate a student staff, which </li></ul> <p>consists of approximately 12 resident assistants.</p> <ul> <li>Assists in enhancing the transition and success of first-year residential students by addressing </li></ul> <p>challenges, including but not limited to, student retention, engagement, and academic success.</p> <ul> <li>Complete outreach as assigned by the CARE team to address first-year student concerns that may impede upon their academic success, as well as manage safety and well-being concerns. </li><li>Administers a follow-up system with first year residential students who have been identified through Starfish, CARE Team and other submission for excessive absences and academic or behavioral concerns. </li><li>Maintain a high level of student contact through availability and visibility with individuals and groups. </li></ul> <p>in the residence hall in order to facilitate academic, personal, and emotional growth.</p> <ul> <li>Collaborate with key stakeholders including faculty, staff and administration to share insights, </li></ul> <p>strategies, and resources to foster a supportive living and learning environment with the goal of</p> <p>increased first-year student retention.</p> <ul> <li>Design a first-year residential programming model with specific retention initiatives, activities, and events. </li><li>Coordinate various departments/presenters for first-year residential area programming. </li><li>Assist the New Student Programs Office during first year orientation programs over the summer: supervise the overnight experience and student staff during first year student orientation periods. </li><li>Assist Student Engagement and Leadership Development Office with program planning and execution for welcome weeks. </li><li>Responsible for program planning and execution of the overnight portion of the Anchor for a Day experience. </li><li>Enforce and support all college and departmental policies and procedures in order to develop a positive and orderly atmosphere with an emphasis on personal and social responsibility. </li><li>Manage all conduct issues and emergency situations that develop within the first-year residential </li></ul> <p>area (with the assistance of appropriate college individuals and/or departments).</p> <ul> <li>Assist in developing and conducting staff development programs/orientation for the resident assistant staff. </li><li>Provide appropriate counseling and/or referral for individual students or staff when needed. </li><li>Aid with the opening/closing of the residence halls (keys, paperwork), preparing buildings for </li></ul> <p>break closings.</p> <ul> <li>Serve on assigned department committees and represent the Office of Residential Life and . </li></ul> <p>Housing on campus-wide committees.</p> <ul> <li>Investigate and respond to concerns and complaints of students, parents, college administrators </li></ul> <p>and others, in a manner that provides accurate information and fosters good public relations.</p> <ul> <li>Work with summer conference groups such as Upward Bound, Orientation, etc. and supervise the students in each building. </li><li>Share on-call responsibility with other Area Coordinators/Hall Directors/Graduate Hall Directors that include responding to crisis situations during evening and late-night hours. </li></ul> <p>Occasional Duties</p> <p>Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Residential Life & Housing/Assistant Dean of Students.</p> <p>Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Previous supervisory experience. </li><li>Commitment to supporting and fostering partnerships with underrepresented student populations. </li><li>Previous experience and desire to work with the first-year student population. </li><li>Demonstrated skills in administration, organization, and supervision. </li><li>Ability to plan and implement programs, counsel students and involve oneself with college activities. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree in student personnel, counseling, higher education or related field. </li><li>Previous residence hall employment experience. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated skills in administration, organization, and supervision. </li><li>Technological Competency with social media platforms. </li><li>Bilingual in English/ Spanish (fluent in speaking and writing). </li></ul> <p>Environmental Conditions</p> <p>The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions.</p>
