<p>This position is vital to the VA Police Services often serving as the face of the VA and as the first person a Veteran or visitor encounters when entering a VA facility. The incumbent provides security and assistance to Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities daily and is expected to empathize, engage, and communicate with all individuals they encounter to ensure a positive outcome and the safety of the facility.</p> <p>This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 31, 2026. The initial cut-off-date for referral eligible applications will be November 22, 2025, with subsequent cut-off-dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.</p> <p>Duties:</p> <p>The incumbent serves as a Police Officer carrying out responsibilities where most work is performed on Veterans Affairs Department properties, which includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed to VA. Major duties include, but are not limited to:</p> <ul> <li>Provides services routinely at all segments of the Memphis VA Medical facilities. </li><li>Protects Veterans, volunteers, and others on Departmental property, U.S. officials, other individuals, and him or herself during any given situation against threats to personal safety when force becomes necessary to enforce laws and regulations. </li><li>Protects Veterans, employees and visitors sensitive and protected medical information from unauthorized release or unauthorized use where prohibited by law and or policy as guided by the privacy officer, FOIA, HIPPA, etc. </li><li>Carries firearms and other VA approved weapons, intervenes when necessary to deescalate situations and determines when and how much force must be applied. </li><li>Advises individuals of their rights, and protects the constitutional and civil rights of persons. </li><li>Conducts investigations with a nexus to VA, prisoner transports, patient search and recovery, life-saving efforts, disaster response and recovery, asset protection during transit, training, and other matters. </li><li>Identifies and preserves evidence, writes comprehensive incident reports, prepares case files and testifies in court as it pertains to enforcing laws and regulations. </li><li>Provides patrol in vehicles and/or by foot . </li><li>Detects and intervenes in criminal activity; responds to calls for police assistance, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances. </li><li>Investigates incidents and takes steps to mitigate further risk and resolve situations. </li><li>Performs drug and contraband intervention techniques and provides training to those areas where contraband identification and knowledge is imperative for the staff. </li><li>Participates in the suicide prevention program and intervenes when needed to deescalate active suicidal behavior and/or prevents suicides. </li><li>Operates specialized vehicles and equipment in support of law enforcement and security operations. </li><li>Enforces traffic rules and regulations, including those related to speeding and reckless operation of vehicles while impaired or intoxicated. </li><li>Performs other related duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. (0083)</p> <p>Work Schedule: Standard Panama twelve (12) hour shift with a full training day each month and also a three day weekend each pay period. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.</p> <p>Recruitment/Relocation: Available for highly qualified candidates.</p> <p>Position Description Title/PD#: Police Officer/PD99925S and PD99925A</p> <p>Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.</p> <p>Relocation/Recruitment Incentive: May be available to highly qualified candidates.</p>
