Other terms as set by the Board of Education in accordance with the New London Public Schools Teachers Contract.</p> <p>PRIMARY FUNCTION: To provide adult students with comprehensive educational, vocational, and personal counseling to support them in achieving their goals. The School Counselor assists the Director in planning, coordinating, and facilitating both onsite and offsite state-mandated High School Credit Diploma and GED programs.</p> <p>TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This description of Adult Education School Counselor is for identification and administrative purposes only. It is not intended to be a complete statement of all duties, which may be assigned or adjusted by the supervisor according to varying needs.</p> <ol> <li> <p>Interview and advise incoming students, determine appropriate educational plans, and conduct vocational and life skills counseling.</p> </li><li> <p>Perform duties of GED Proctor and Registrar, Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) Examiner, Pearson Vue testing proctor, Disability Contact Person, and Working Papers Agent.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain student record system, and certify occupational experience, training, and specialized skills for high school credit.</p> </li><li> <p>Monitor and document independent study by helping establish student learning plans.</p> </li><li> <p>Administers and interprets standardized tests and assessments including official GED practice test, GED examination, CASAS testing, and related adult education skills assessments.</p> </li><li> <p>Register and schedule adult day and evening CDP students and GED candidates.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversees post-secondary transition activities and coordinates participant eligibility, referral, and enrollment for special programs through Department of Education, EWIB, and community grants.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee the GED management system and the certification of test proctors.</p> </li><li> <p>Provide ongoing support and resources to adult learners and staff.</p> </li><li> <p>Serve as a liaison to Department of Social Services, and Department of Education, American Job Center, and local agencies in matters providing client linkage to community resources.</p> </li><li> <p>Works in cooperation with guidance staff from local high schools in matters concerning referral of inschool youth to adult education.</p> </li><li> <p>Refer adults to appropriate community agencies as needed.</p> </li><li> <p>Send, receive, and evaluate student transcripts.</p> </li><li> <p>Process requests for transcripts, education verifications, and attendance verification forms.</p> </li><li> <p>Use a data and policy driven approach, utilizing the following programs and systems to inform program planning, improvement, resource allocation, and training initiatives for the CDP and GED programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Facilitate collaboration within the CDP, GED, and IET teams to plan and deliver individualized instruction that accommodates students' diverse needs, abilities, and educational backgrounds.</p> </li><li> <p>Work closely with Adult Education administration to support cohesion across all Adult Education teams.</p> </li><li> <p>Assist with coordination of professional development related to effective instructional practices and curriculum-aligned learning opportunities for staff.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in educational conferences related to adult, community, and career education.</p> </li><li> <p>Stay current with research, trends, methods, and practices in local labor markets, vocational training, and adult education.</p> </li><li> <p>Support the vision and mission of New London Public Schools and the goals and priorities of New London Adult and Continuing Education.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain regular attendance and professional appearance.</p> </li><li> <p>Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director.</p> </li></ol> <p>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>State certification endorsement: School Counselor - 068 </li><li>Five (5) or more years of experience working in Adult Education specifically with Adult Basic Education programs (high school diploma, GED, basic skills and ESL) </li><li>Familiarity and experience with various standardized adult testing and assessment tools including, but not limited to, the General Educational Development (GED) exam, Connecticut Competency System (CCS) framework, Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) standardized tests, and the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) </li><li>Thorough knowledge of current employment, training, and WIOA policies and services for appropriate placement and community referral </li><li>Experience in working with special adult populations, including those disadvantaged by economic, educational, social, and language barriers </li><li>Demonstrated experience cultivating a climate of teamwork among a large and diverse staff </li><li>Experience utilizing student performance data for program planning </li><li>Strong interpersonal skills: ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders </li><li>Strong advocacy and presentation skills </li><li>Excellent oral and written communication skills </li><li>Flexibility to work a varied schedule including days, evenings and travel as needed </li></ul> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Bilingual (English and Spanish) </li><li>Experience as a school counselor in a culturally diverse urban school </li><li>Experience using College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for adult education </li><li>Proficiency utilizing adult education assessment tools, CASAS eTesting, and data to meet requirements and performance measures as set forth by: o The State of Connecticut Bureau of Health/Nutrition, Family Services and Adult Education o Adult Education and Family Literacy Act o State of Connecticut WIOA Unified Plan o EWIB performance criteria </li></ul> <p>PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Annually by the Director of Adult Education or Designee</p> <p>Attachment(s):</p> <ul> <li>AE School Counselor Job Description </li></ul>
