<p>JOB SUMMARY: The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic provides direct patient care under the supervision of the RN as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support under direct supervision of the physician while working in the Emergency Department or in the community in a paramedicine role. Duties and responsibilities are performed in a manner adhering to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The ED Paramedic participates with all members of the ED team to facilitate patient flow through the ED. The ED paramedic provides patient care as dictated by patient need, direction of the RN and in compliance with the scope of practice outlined in Nursing Policy NR 300 "Delegation of Care."</p> <p>The Paramedic is qualified to perform an intervention defined as administration of moderate sedation (conscious sedation) and can monitor the patient's response and provide necessary physiological support during a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. The Paramedic will receive initial education on hire in moderate sedation and will have an annual competency.</p> <p>EFFECTIVE DATE: 07/23/2021</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrates reassessment documentation of emergency department patients and proper communication of findings to other allied healthcare members. </li><li>Demonstrates appropriate chain of command use and delegation of care responsibilities. </li><li>Provides holistic, patient-centered care while providing for established patient rights of the organization. </li><li>Maintains required level of continuing education for related professional licensure and certification. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>PATIENT CARE</p> <ul> <li>Provides and documents care consistent with hospital, departmental and unit policies/procedures/protocols. </li><li>Places patient in room as requested by RN </li><li>Performs measurement of temperature, non-invasive blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, pain scale, and oxygen saturation and records in patients? medical record </li><li>Attaches patient to cardiac monitor. </li><li>Performs 12 lead EKG </li><li>Places patient on Oxygen as ordered by /MD </li><li>Performs ACLS skills under direct supervision of MD* during code situations in the Emergency Department. </li><li>Performs veni-puncture for blood draws or insert/remove peripheral IV/Lock </li><li>Administers limited medications as ordered by physician and detailed in Nursing Policy. May co-sign narcotic waste </li><li>Hangs IV fluids as ordered by a physician. </li><li>Obtain IS or Peak Flow as ordered by /MD </li><li>Performs Accu Checks as ordered by MD </li><li>Performs Chest compressions and manually ventilates patient as requested by RN/MD </li><li>Assist with cleansing, suture set up and dressing wounds as requested by RN/MD </li><li>Assist with the care of an Orthopedic patient as requested by RN/MD (Ace wraps, Ice, slings, etc.). </li><li>Assist with EENT procedures as requested. 18. Assist with Gastric Lavage as requested per RN </li><li>Obtains CCMS, Stool, Wound, Nasal and Throat cultures as requested </li><li>Performs I&O Catheter as ordered by MD </li><li>Assists ED staff in keeping patients and family members informed. </li><li>Discontinues peripheral IV?s </li><li>Transports/Assist with transport of patients as requested by RN </li><li>Assist with ambulation and dismissal of patients </li><li>Assist with RHC care as requested </li><li>Communicates pertinent patient information to the RN clearly, accurately, concisely and in a timely manner. </li></ul> <p>DEPARTMENT DUTIES</p> <ul> <li>Stocks supplies, cleans equipment & transports to/from CSR as needed, transports specimens via pneumatic tube system, orders supplies as needed. </li><li>Receives patients into Meditech at the front desk, and notifies the charge nurse/triage nurse immediately of patient?s presence and chief complaint. </li></ul> <p>PROFESSIONAL GROWTH</p> <ul> <li>Attends educational activities to improve knowledge/skill. </li><li>Contributes to implementing and supporting progressive change, making suggestions to solve patient care or unit problems. </li><li>Attends 80% unit/departmental meetings and in-service presentations as assigned. </li><li>Demonstrates acceptable attendance and punctuality. </li></ul> <p>QUALITY / PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT</p> <ul> <li>Participate in identifying or recommending areas for improvement. </li><li>Participates in quality improvement activities to improve patient care related to planned outcomes. </li></ul> <p>FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY</p> <ul> <li>Completes assigned responsibilities in an efficient, timely manner. </li><li>Recognizes impact of actions on other departments and interacts in a manner conducive to teamwork and cost containment. </li><li>Properly charges exams upon completion through the IMS according to departmental procedure. </li></ul> <p>SAFETY</p> <ul> <li>Practice is consistent with safety principles, OSHA Guidelines and infection control guidelines. </li><li>Provides for protection and support while moving, transferring or ambulating patients. </li><li>Observes equipment for malfunction and takes appropriate action. </li></ul> <p>GUEST RELATIONS / PATIENT RIGHTS</p> <ul> <li>Delivers patient care in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner respecting the patient?s rights. </li><li>Honors individuals' right to privacy, dignity, respect and confidentiality at all times. </li><li>Confronts individuals/situations assertively and non-aggressively when necessary to ensure the rights of patients, self and others are respected. </li><li>Readily offers assistance to families, visitors, patients/resident and colleagues. </li><li>Conducts interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, other associates and the public in a manner consistent with the intent of the hospital?s mission, vision and values. </li></ul> <p>EXPECTED BEHAVIORS:</p>
