<p>General Summary & Essential Responsibilities</p> <p>Lead a vital mission to protect lives and property as a key supervisor in the Fire Prevention Division. In this high-impact role, you'll oversee a dedicated team of fire prevention professionals while working closely with the Fire Marshal to ensure community safety. Your responsibilities include reviewing construction and renovation plans, inspecting new and existing buildings for compliance with fire and life safety codes, and conducting thorough fire investigations. This is more than just a job-it's a leadership role at the forefront of public safety and risk reduction.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS</p> <ul> <li>Assists in the supervision of the Fire Prevention Division: ensures and participates in enforcement of the local fire prevention codes and standards related to site inspections of places of assembly including businesses, educational institutions, residences, basic industries, and inspections of the storage of flammables, the installation of equipment or facilities representing potential fire hazards, and other fire safety measures. </li><li>Assists management in the development of rules and policies involving the Fire Prevention Division. </li><li>Conducts investigations of commercial, residential, wild land, and other miscellaneous fires in the County to determine fire cause and origin, including operating at fire scenes, directing crews in salvage and overhaul to ensure preservation of evidence, interfacing with law enforcement and insurance officials. </li><li>Supervises assigned staff; organizes, prioritizes and assigns work; monitors work in progress and inspects completed work; provides guidance, direction and technical expertise; and is responsible for the selection, promotion, training, safety, appraisal, and discipline of fire inspectors. </li><li>Conducts training classes for the department, County, and community on issues related to fire prevention and safety, including delivering educational presentations to public groups, organizations, and businesses, and participating in special events involving public safety education. </li><li>Receives and examines blueprints, plans and specifications of commercial, residential, public and private buildings, facilities and structures for conformity with fire codes, ordinances and requirements; approves or denies plans; and makes corrective recommendations. </li><li>Consults with builders, owners, contractors, and others to identify potential problems or violations; troubleshoots problems and identifies solutions; makes necessary modifications and/or changes required; and verifies corrective action is taken. </li><li>Maintains appropriate records, files and progress reports on work accomplishments; prepares approval letters; and ensures records are kept according to departmental guidelines, accepted record keeping practices and legal requirements. </li><li>Ascertains and applies developments and changes in applicable codes and ordinances, technology, operating and construction techniques, procedures and legal requirements; maintains comprehensive knowledge of existing and proposed changes to County ordinances, state laws and codes, and industry standards; and makes recommendations regarding needed changes. </li><li>May respond to fire and emergency alarms and works under the direction of the incident commander in performing suppression and related functions. </li><li>Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or addressing complaints through all forms of communication. </li></ul> <p>Min. Education, Licenses and Certifications</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <p>An equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Associate's Degree:</p> </li><li> <p>Preferred:</p> </li><li> <p>Fire Sciences</p> </li><li> <p>Five (5) years work experience in fire prevention or code inspection</p> </li></ul> <p>Licenses and/or Certificates:</p> <ul> <li>Must maintain a valid driver's license. </li><li>Must possess and maintain the following certifications: </li><li>Florida Municipal Fire Safety Inspector </li><li>Florida Fire Investigator </li><li>Florida Firefighter </li><li>ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800 </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications. </li><li>Knowledge of the federal, State, and County laws and codes regarding fire safety and prevention. </li><li>Knowledge of modern principles and techniques of fire prevention, including inspections methods, fire hazard, and methods of eliminating hazardous conditions. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of modern firefighting and rescue principles, practices, and methods; and fire department policies, rules, and regulations, and of fire prevention methods. </li><li>Thorough knowledge of the practices of each of the divisions of the Fire/EMS Department, including considerable knowledge of the geography of the County. </li><li>Knowledge of building and construction principles and practices and familiarity with all aspects of fire service. </li><li>Skill in fire investigation and in recognizing fire code violations and hazardous conditions. </li><li>Ability to recognize and define fire hazards and to recommend effective remedial measures. </li><li>Ability to read and interpret construction and building diagrams, plans, and blueprints and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction and installation processes, and to recommend correction as required by the Fire Prevention Code. </li><li>Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of installation, and of stages of construction, when possible, defects and violations may most easily be observed and corrected, with the knowledge of the materials and methods to make such corrections. </li><li>Ability to plan, train, organize, and supervise the work of assigned employees engaged in fire inspection and suppression work. </li><li>Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. </li><li>Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and blueprints, recognizing faulty construction or hazardous conditions. </li><li>Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives, good written and oral communication skills. </li><li>Knowledge of standard office computer equipment and software applications; ability to maintain accurate records and reports. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. </li><li>Ability to operate a motor vehicle. </li><li>Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication. </li></ul> <p>Supplemental Information</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS</p> <p>Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <p>Work typically requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoors weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).</p> <p>RISK/SAFETY CONDITIONS</p> <p>The position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).</p> <p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.
