<p>Job Description:</p> <p>The Danbury Public Schools have experienced tremendous growth of its student population over the last several years, which has led to significant expansion of the District's transportation obligations across the City, with increased ridership volume and the addition of the new Danbury High School-West in the fall 2025. The Director of Transportation is a newly created, supervisory position, established for the purpose of overseeing all student transportation District-wide during the full calendar year, including regular education and special education transportation and transportation to non-public schools as required by state law. It is anticipated that the successful Director applicant will eventually oversee a small team of administrative assistants exclusively dedicated to the transportation function, communicating with all stakeholders to plan and implement the whole range of transportation functions. The Director of Transportation will be expected to work closely with senior level District administrators, including the Superintendent, the Chief Finance Officer, City officials, administrators of non-public schools and educational facilities, and executives from the bus company.</p> <ul> <li>Liaison person between the Superintendent's office, key district administrators, and parents, to communicate accurate and critical information regarding transportation of students. </li><li>Coordinates the fulfillment of transportation needs by working closely with the DPS Central Registration Center, individual school administrators, and key bus company employees to plan and implement efficient and effective student transportation. </li><li>Coordinates, prepares, updates and communicates all bus routes for all public and non-public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade for all students including special education, vocational programs, and summer programs. </li><li>Maintains budget for summer school transportation, and coordinates routes and other related programs. </li><li>Coordinates out-of-district transportation for special education students in conjunction with Pupil Service staff. </li><li>Administers transportation system (e.g. answers inquiries, refers problems to data processing or vendor, installs new software, beta tests, etc.) for the purpose of providing system support to the Transportation Department. </li><li>Ensures the accuracy of communicated bus runs for annual publication </li><li>Coordinates and enters data into the computerized transportation system (e.g. street names, speed limits, stops, hazards, walking boundaries, left and right turn directions, student data, new and changed school boundary information, etc.) for the purpose of creating route maps. </li><li>Prepares and maintains daily log relative to transportation problems and submit a monthly summary of transportation efficiency. </li><li>Recommends route additions and changes (e.g. finds new development and map information, etc.) for the purpose of keeping routes and data up-to-date. </li><li>Maintains student enrollment for both public and parochial schools and disseminates all related reports. Coordinates and oversees all transportation to non-public schools as required by state law. </li><li>When requested, meet with principals and parents to discuss and solve transportation problems. </li><li>Communicates with drivers, Bus Company personnel, special education department, school staff, parents, and others (e.g. reviewing route maps, responding to inquiries, etc.) for the purpose of assisting with route-related problems. </li><li>Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and staff (e.g. stop locations, schedule, state-regulated policies, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding busing issues. </li><li>When requested, does preliminary investigation of bus route modification requests in conjunction with the bus company. Recommends resolution/approval/denial of request. Presents any challenges to bus routes raised by parents to the Board of Education pursuant to state law. </li><li>Reviews field trip requests to arrange transportation and maintain proper billing. </li><li>Coordinates with Cabinet and bus company about Student Accident reports and Break and Vandalism Reports. </li><li>Serves as a critical member of the Superintendent's Emergency Response Team and Enrollment Committees, and coordinates and communicates to both public and non-public for changes in schedule (PD Days, weather or emergency-related issues) Expected participation in early morning and late evening as needed during emergencies or for weather-related changes at the direction of the Superintendent. </li><li>Conducts an annual evaluation of the efficiency of the transportation function, assisting the Chief Financial Officer in the negotiation of transportation related contracts, including providing suggested efficiencies and alternatives. </li></ul>
