The primary responsibility will be providing specialized instruction and support to meet the needs of visually impaired students, ages 5-26 years, in various instructional settings. This position requires proficient Braille and tactile graphic skills, and familiarity with technology for the visually impaired. Knowledge of various eye conditions, interpreting the educational implications, and providing training to school personnel and families, are requirements for this role. An understanding of the current IEP process is necessary for service coordination.</p> <p>DISTRICT OVERVIEW:</p> <p>Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,300 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. This includes a completely confidential, short-term counseling service that utilizes a practical approach toward problem resolution and is available 7 days a week, with no cost to the employee.</p> </li><li> <p>Paid holidays; earned vacation, sick, and bereavement days.</p> </li><li> <p>Longevity pay.</p> </li><li> <p>Paid "act of God" days, such as snow days.</p> </li></ul> <p>Additionally, the children of employees working 20+ hours, living outside the district's attendance boundaries, are eligible to attend Livonia Public Schools via schools of choice.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in the area of visual impairment preferred </li><li>Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate and willingness to join the Visual Impairment Consortium for Teacher Preparation. </li><li>A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students </li><li>Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships </li><li>Skills in individualizing instruction </li><li>Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders. </li><li>Superior verbal and written communication skills </li><li>Must have a knowledge of federal and state special education laws and requirements </li><li>A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students </li><li>Must have a knowledge of the organization and administration of local, county and state agencies and their services for students </li><li>Work cooperatively with VI consultants and RESA support staff </li></ul> <p>MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Utilizes comprehensive vision assessments which may include functional low vision, learning media, Braille skills, independent living skills </li><li>Provides instruction in the expanded core curriculum </li><li>Provides accommodations/modifications to educational materials and the environment </li><li>Recommends and instructs student and/or staff and family in vision devices, equipment, and technology appropriate to student needs to be participants in the classroom activities </li><li>Supports the student in academic content/concepts as needed </li><li>Train's school personnel, classmates, and family on eye conditions and student needs </li><li>Coordinates and/or participates in the IEP process on an annual basis </li><li>Attends professional learning opportunities to expand and keep current on visual impairments and services </li><li>Follows all District guidelines, protocols, and procedures </li><li>Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by building administrator </li></ul> <p>CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:</p> <p>The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association.
