The application window may close unexpectedly once we have enough qualified candidates.</p> <p>EXAM NUMBER: C3034U-FR</p> <p>The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild. If you are looking for a new career that will directly benefit the population of LA County, this may be the opportunity for you.</p> <p>The Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill an emergency Safety Inspector vacancy related to this unprecedented natural disaster.</p> <p>Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.</p> <p>During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.</p> <p>Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Safety Inspector.</p> <p>A Safety Inspector is responsible for a combination of the following job functions:</p> <ul> <li>Performs the full range of safety inspections and trains line personnel in safety inspections of the department's major facilities, buildings, equipment, work practices, and work areas. </li><li>Participates in field and other inspections to ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA standards such as ergonomics, confined space, respiratory protection, and asbestos. </li><li>Investigates accidents, inspects equipment involved, interviews witnesses, and prepares reports of findings to superiors and County Counsel, as necessary. </li><li>Analyzes departmental safety records, including Cal/OSHA logs, automotive accident reports and reports on industrial injuries and makes recommendations to improve worker safety. </li><li>Trains supervisors in accident prevention techniques, accident reporting, and first-aid procedures. </li><li>Distributes, receives, checks, processes, and transmits automotive and industrial accident reports in conformance with State and County rules and regulations. </li><li>Maintains and interprets automotive and industrial accident statistics. </li><li>Participates in various departmental or County safety or accident review committees. </li><li>Assists in the preparation and distribution of safety manuals, bulletins, posters, and articles. </li><li>Evaluates and, if necessary, recommends changes in safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment and other devices to meet Cal/OSHA regulations or other safety standards. </li><li>Maintains statistical records, writes reports, and prepares correspondence. </li><li>Assists in all aspects of departmental safety training sessions in respiratory protection, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, ergonomics, radiation safety, asbestos, confined space, hazard communication, and other departmental safety training programs. </li><li>Conducts and supervise work site and field monitoring inspections using air, sound, and other monitoring devices, as needed. </li><li>Plans and conducts the department's training programs, as needed. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Option I: Two years of experience as a Safety Assistant*. </p> <p>Option II: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a specialization in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, physics, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field -AND- one year of experience at the level of Safety Assistant* in the areas of Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a closely related field. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, physics, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.</p> <p>LICENSE:</p> <p>A valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.</p> <p>You MUST meet the requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.</p> <p>PHYSICAL CLASS:</p> <p>Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. </p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:</p> <ul> <li>To qualify, applicants must have County status as a Safety Assistant as evidenced by holding such payroll title in the County of Los Angeles Public Works for the required period of time. No out-of-class experience will be accepted. </li></ul> <p>To receive credit for your education, include a copy of your official diploma, official transcript, or letter/certificate from an accredited institution within five (5) days of filing your application. The document should show the date the degree was conferred and be in English; if it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards.
