Step Salary System to be awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step 1. Please note the salary range indicated is firm.</p> <p>Bargaining Unit: 1162</p> <p>To view the respective collective bargaining agreement please click here.</p> <p>REPORTS TO:</p> <p>Works under the direct supervision of the General Foreman or Construction Foreman, following department rules, regulations and safety procedures and policies to complete assignments. Priorities are established by the supervisor.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Must perform semi-skilled manual work requiring skills of less than journeyman grade in the construction and repair of roads, streets, and sidewalks </li><li>Does excavating, bracing, and grading </li><li>Assists in the construction of cement and brick sidewalks </li><li>Sets edge stones and repairs manholes </li><li>Participates in snow and ice removal by preparing trucks and plows </li><li>Plows and shovels snow </li><li>May be required to make signs, order materials for signs, install and repair signs </li><li>Lifts and carries manhole covers, catch basin covers and other heavy objects </li><li>May work the evening shift and respond to emergency calls from the public, police, fire or other emergency personnel </li><li>May answer and log in telephone calls for service </li><li>Performs other related duties as assigned by the DPW Commissioner, Superintendent of Operations or their designee </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:</p> <p>High school diploma required; technical training in the use of hand tools and construction equipment desired; two years of general construction experience; experience operating trucks and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.</p> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of techniques of construction and the operation of maintenance equipment </li><li>Knowledge of safety practices and procedures </li><li>Ability to perform heavy construction work </li><li>Ability to solve construction related problems </li><li>Ability to operate heavy and other motor equipment, power, pneumatic and hand tools and specialized equipment </li><li>Construction skills </li><li>Skills in operation of equipment and tools </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</p> <p>Work is performed outside and requires strenuous physical effort. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, sit, speak, hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, climb and work in confined space. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions. Required to lift or move items weighing up to 60 pounds. Physical ability to use power and hand tools, drive motor vehicles, operate and drive various pieces of special maintenance equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to operate vehicles and equipment.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>Work is performed outside, with exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts; outdoor work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with use of heavy equipment. Workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations often requiring emergency responses. The employee operates a variety of equipment, such as trucks and other heavy and light equipment. The employee operates various hand power and pneumatic tools. The employee generally has contact with other City departments, utility personnel and occasionally contractors.
