<p>Position is open until Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 4:30 PM EST</p> <p>PRIMARY FUNCTION:</p> <p>Under the general supervision of the Field Services General Foreman, responds to electric, gas, and water division emergencies, provides field and metering support to electric, gas, water, and sewer divisions, responds promptly to odor of gas notifications, supports the City of Norwich Building Department with HVAC technical expertise, maintains and repairs NPU and City of Norwich HVAC, and activates and shuts off utility services. Trains and assists Field Services Apprentice Technicians.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Participates in on-call rotation and is required to respond to after-hours "Emergency" calls within 30 minutes when on call </li><li>Keeps routine records and checks meter readings </li><li>Sets, disconnects and resets gas and electric meters </li><li>Lights appliances and checks operation for safety </li><li>Installs gas remotes </li><li>Troubleshoots electrical power problems (no power, partial power, etc.) </li><li>Performs all duties of a Utility Installer/Collector </li><li>Shop tests and calibrates residential gas meters and residential and commercial electric meters </li><li>Installs, tests and verifies gas, electric and water residential and commercial metering including primary electric metering Programs electronic gas and electric meters </li><li>Performs gas and electric high bill complaints on customer's premises </li><li>Inspects for violations of NFPA 54 and has basic knowledge of the NEC codes </li><li>Troubleshoots and makes moderately complex repairs to residential heating systems and appliances </li><li>Troubleshoots no gas trouble calls </li><li>Repairs gas water heaters </li><li>Responds to odor of gas trouble calls using gas test equipment both inside and outside </li><li>Builds new loops and repairs old loops for gas meter installations </li><li>Installs outside vents on high-pressure gas meters </li><li>Checks for and repairs gas leaks </li><li>Maintains truck stock for routinely-used parts and provides accurate data for billing </li><li>Determines parts needed for repairs and orders special parts for customers </li><li>Provides technical assistance for the City of Norwich Building Department in evaluating new and existing electric, gas and water installations and HVAC equipment Installs, maintains and repairs residential and commercial HVAC systems under direction of a Chief Field Service Technician or the Field Service General Foreman </li></ul> <p>RELATED DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li>Removes and replaces utility meter boxes </li><li>Checks for diversion of power </li><li>Makes periodic checks of odorant level in gas </li><li>Converts various types of equipment from liquid petroleum to natural gas </li><li>Participates on Department-wide work teams and committees chartered to evaluate or improve processes and promote the overall goals of the Department </li><li>Works with management and fellow employees to identify and correct health and safety concerns </li><li>Participates in setting group goals, assessing group accomplishments and providing feedback for continuous process improvement </li><li>Identifies and takes advantage of opportunities to introduce other NPU products and services to customers </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <ul> <li>Graduate of technical high school with 4 years of technical course work and minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; OR </li><li>Graduate of high school with less than 4 years of technical course work and minimum of 8 years relevant experience. </li><li>Experience in dealing directly with customers in the performance of technical duties is strongly preferred. </li><li>Must possess a valid State of Connecticut driving license. </li><li>Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut G2 or greater, Limited Heating, Piping, and Cooling Journeyperson license, or equivalent, or ability to obtain and maintain G2 or greater license, or equivalent withing 1 years from date of hire. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated ability to interact positively, professionally and proactively with customers, external contacts and contractors. </li><li>Able to instill confidence by resolving customer problems in a prompt, courteous and timely manner. Able to use interpersonal skills and technical knowledge to extract information from the customer and explain technical problems/solutions. </li><li>Able to maintain and enhance NPU's public image. </li><li>Able to work under pressure and not get easily frustrated. </li><li>Ability to make accurate mathematical calculations </li><li>Able to manage stock </li><li>Able to gather information and prepare reports </li><li>Must be computer literate and able to learn to use various systems </li><li>Able to understand and follow written and oral instructions. </li><li>Able to follow safety rules and procedures. </li><li>Demonstrated knowledge of basic electricity. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to operate within established policies, practices and regulations. </li><li>Demonstrated knowledge of electric meter configurations for proper application. </li><li>Able to assess and communicate energy usage for a wide variety of appliances </li><li>Able to read a wide variety of meters, analyze billing history and estimate consumption </li><li>Demonstrated working knowledge of our system's secondary voltages </li><li>Able to use a wide variety of gas and electrical test equipment. </li><li>Demonstrated working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, gas piping, venting and electrical codes. </li><li>Demonstrated working knowledge of types of pipe, tubing fittings and hand tools used for HVAC, plumbing and pipefitting. </li><li>Must be able to obtain and maintain all required Natural Gas Operator Qualifications as defined in the NPU Operator Qualification (OQ) Program, including periodic changes to the program, within 18 months from date of hire. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</p> <p>The physical demands of this position are challenging and varied. They involve repetitive bending, stooping, lifting and crouching and require small muscle coordination, good eyesight and hearing, as well as the ability to speak clearly and write legibly.
