You will analyze federal and SC corporate income tax returns, as well as returns from banks and savings and loan institutions. You will complete audit write-ups, work papers, proposed assessments, and work with Appeals and Litigation supporting audit positions and adjustments.</p> <p>Primary job duties include:</p> <ul> <li>Learning audit issues, work papers, and applicable authority. </li><li>Participating in team and independent audits of large multi-state corporations to verify the accuracy of returns. </li><li>Preparing delinquent returns, as necessary, for non-filers to ensure compliance with SC corporate income and license fee tax laws. </li><li>Assisting in preparing and submitting professional audit reports, which include a detail of the basis and justification for proposed taxpayer audit adjustments. </li><li>Explaining audit results to taxpayers and their representatives in a clear and professional manner. </li><li>Reviewing tax returns, company filing history, financial statements, and other related information to identify underreported income and potential audit issues for the purposes of audit selection. </li><li>Completing research and training to improve audit skills and knowledge related to corporate income tax law and returns. </li><li>Note: Most audits are conducted electronically; however, you can travel for field work out-of-state for some audits if you prefer. Each audit is different, and you have the opportunity to learn different industries. You also have the delegation to determine your audit schedule. SCDOR offers a flexible work schedule. </li></ul> <p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p> <p>A bachelor's degree and professional experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis</p> <p>Additional requirement:</p> <ul> <li>A valid Driver's License </li><li>College transcripts required for consideration. Transcripts may be attached to the application or emailed to employment.scdor@dor.sc.gov. </li></ul> <p>Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects </li><li>Six years of professional experience </li><li>Four years of professional experience and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, Master of Accountancy, Master of Taxation, or a law degree </li><li>Professional work experience in tax auditing, corporate tax, or at a CPA firm </li><li>Considerable knowledge of accounting principles, methods, procedures and their application to the South Carolina Tax Acts and Regulations </li></ul> <p>Additional Comments</p> <ul> <li>EEO: The SCDOR is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, including, but not limited to, lactation. </li><li>Training: Corporate Income Tax Auditors will participate in a classroom and on-the-job training program to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to successfully perform their job.
