<p>This position is under the Patient Care Services (PCS), Procedural Medicine, Phlebotomy section. The service, a clinical support service for patients being treated at the Medical Center, provides phlebotomy and support of diagnostic testing 24 hours per day, seven days per week including weekends and holidays.</p> <p>MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Duties are not all inclusive):</p> <p>Venous Puncture/Specimen Collection:</p> <ul> <li>The majority of the incumbent's day will be spent performing routine venipuncture specimen collections from outpatients Monday - Friday. </li><li>The incumbent will be required to proficiently collect these blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or repeat venous puncture, and ensure that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. </li><li>Responsible for proper patient identification, proper sample procurement, and proper specimen labeling guidelines. </li><li>Performs phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of steps approved for sample collection. Independently responsible for selecting the best venipuncture site, most suitable phlebotomy equipment ( needle type, size and length), most appropriate cleansing agent(s), proper collection vials and assessing the patient's condition before, during and after the procedure if deemed medically necessary. </li><li>Responsible for preparation of the collection site and for drawing blood cultures without contamination including training on new blood culture kits. </li><li>Attends to the patients while in their care during the phlebotomy procedure including helping patients in the restroom if patient needs assistance with urine collection. </li><li>Is attentive to patient needs, actions and complaints.
