<p>Job Description</p> <p>INTRODUCTION:</p> <p>The Racine Wastewater Utility is responsible for the recycling of municipal wastewater for return as a clean resource into Lake Michigan through the operation of advanced computer instrumentation and mechanical equipment. The Utility is designed to treat 36 mgd of regional flow serving the City of Racine, Village of Mount Pleasant, Village of Caledonia, Village of Sturtevant, Village of Elmwood Park, and Village of North Bay.</p> <p>POSITION PURPOSE:</p> <p>The purpose of this position is to perform plant maintenance work of a skilled nature.</p> <p>Essential Duties</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES:</p> <p>The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.</p> <ul> <li>Repairs and maintains wastewater machinery, physical structure, and equipment in accordance to blueprints or manuals, using hand or power tools. </li><li>Inspects machinery and mechanical equipment for defect or malfunction. </li><li>Dismantles machinery or equipment to access defective parts, and repairs or replaces using various hand tools. </li><li>Cleans and lubricates equipment according to the manufactures recommendations and department preventative maintenance schedules. </li><li>Repairs or replaces gages, valves, pressure regulators and other hydraulic or measuring equipment; opens clogged drains using plumbing equipment. </li><li>Maintains physical structure using hand tools and power equipment either working independently or in tandem with other plant mechanics or personnel. </li><li>May assist electrician in installing or replacing equipment and electrical apparatus. </li><li>Participates in preventive maintenance program by keeping records of lubrication and repairs. </li><li>Works with computerized maintenance program work orders and updating of computer information </li><li>Maintains accurate electronic or hard copy records of lubrication and repairs in the utility preventive maintenance program. </li><li>Works cooperatively with other Utility departments and staff to respond appropriately to emergency situations, or assist on projects in the plant. </li><li>Adheres to all safety procedures and safety rules, as well as Utility work rules and policies. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>High School graduation, or GED equivalent, and at least 18 years old. </li><li>5 years of prior verifiable professional mechanical experience working with pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines in an area related to industrial plant or commercial automotive maintenance; or a combination of years and education is preferred. </li><li>Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, automotive, or electro-mechanical technology is a plus. </li><li>A valid state-issued motor vehicle operating license. </li></ul> <p>ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Ability to apply good work practices by planning work and utilizing materials efficiently. </li><li>Skill in analyzing, diagnosing, correcting mechanical failures and defects; including a working knowledge of mechanical functions, principles and techniques. </li><li>Must have good mechanical aptitude, verifiable by past work experience. </li><li>Advancement from mechanic grade H to garage mechanic grade I level upon supervisor recommendation based on the demonstration of skills and abilities associated with the diagnosis, tuning, and maintenance of plant power equipment (engines, blowers, and generators). </li></ul> <p>Supplemental Information</p> <p>PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABILITY REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Language and Interpersonal Communication.</p> <ul> <li>Ability to utilize, interpret, and apply a variety of advisory data and information such as instructional pamphlets, blueprints, line diagrams, meters, gauges, operation and maintenance manuals, charts, and graphs. </li><li>Ability to communicate orally and in writing with varied and diverse contacts, such as Utility personnel, vendor representatives, and contractors. </li><li>Ability to understand and follow specific written and oral instructions; and perform duties with a minimum of direct supervision. </li><li>Ability to work independently and as a participating work team member. </li></ul> <p>Judgement and Situational Reasoning</p> <ul> <li>Ability to apply rational and ethical judgment, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with Utility personnel, public customers, contractors, and vendors. </li><li>Ability to exert strenuous physical effort to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. </li><li>Must not have fear of heights (work off ladders or scaffolds). </li><li>Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces. </li><li>Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as goggles, face shields, gloves, boots, steel-toed shoes, masks, respirators, and ear plugs or ear muffs. </li></ul> <p>Work Environment and Conditions</p> <ul> <li>Ability to work outdoors under severe weather conditions; hot and cold; rain, snow, sleet, wind, and sun. </li><li>Ability to walk extensively, often while carrying tools and supplies, and work in a standing position for long stretches of time. </li><li>Ability to work in less than desirable conditions (such as wastewater treatment basins, tunnels) under potentially moderately unsafe and uncomfortable conditions, where exposure to environmental factors such as odors, dampness, chemicals, noise, pathogenic organisms, electrical currents, and/or dusts can cause a risk of injury; step and ladder climbing with fall hazards, slip and trip hazards, and large water basins with fall and drowning risk. </li></ul> <p>EQUIPMENT USED</p> <ul> <li>Hand tools, power tools, welder, hoists, gas torch, hydraulic and drill press, power washer, steam cleaner, fire hoses, shovels, snow blowers, power vehicles, Bobcat, fork lift, hoists, step ladders, extension ladders, hydraulic lifts, electronic diagnostic equipment, miscellaneous tools and equipment, and office equipment. </li><li>Software technology used may include maintenance software, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Time Management Software (TMS);
