We are dedicated to protecting the state of South Carolina and we would love to have you as a member of our team!</p> <p>Science | Service | Sustainability</p> <p>Protect South Carolina's Water Quality While Using Your Technical Expertise</p> <p>Join our Industrial Wastewater Permitting team in the Bureau of Water and use your science and technical skills to protect our state's waterways. You'll control environmental effects of industrial wastewater and sludge by developing National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and No Discharge (ND) land application permit conditions, issuing general permit coverages, and reviewing closure plans related to industrial facilities.</p> <p>What You'll Do</p> <ul> <li>Determine NPDES and ND permit conditions for industrial wastewater discharges and prepare permits for issuance using applicable regulations, policy and guidance. Request wasteload allocations and other necessary intra-agency input; review historical and background monitoring data; review appropriate development & guidance documents; contact facility to obtain required or supplemental information. Finalize permits for issuance. </li><li>Review moderately complex closure plans for industrial wastewater facilities using appropriate regulations, policy and guidance. Request intra-agency input. Contact facilities to obtain required or supplemental information. Coordinate DES reviews. Finalize approvals for issuance. </li><li>Determine General Permit coverage for applicable discharges. </li><li>Hold conferences with industrial representatives and consulting engineers in the formulation of permit conditions. Coordinate with appropriate DES personnel (district offices, groundwater, etc.) Arrange and direct meetings toward suitable, specific conclusions. </li><li>Provide information to the public, industrial representatives, and consulting engineers using appropriate regulations, policy and guidance. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and supervisor. </li></ul> <p>What We're Looking For</p> <ul> <li>Ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines. </li><li>Ability to analyze technical environmental issues; evaluate engineering submittals; develop permit requirements; exhibit good planning. </li><li>Must have good oral and written communication skills. </li><li>Ability to work with other SCDES staff to gather necessary input; and interact with the public and government officials at all levels. </li><li>Proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) software required. </li><li>Must have and maintain a valid driver's license. </li></ul> <p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p> <p>You must meet one of the following:</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree in natural/physical sciences or related technical field + 1 year of environmental health/related experience </li><li>Bachelor's degree in natural/physical sciences or related technical field + 2 years of environmental health/related experience </li><li>Associate degree in natural/physical sciences or related technical field + 4 years of environmental health/related experience </li><li>High school diploma + 6 years of environmental health/related experience </li></ul> <p>Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.</p> <p>Applicants indicating college credit or degree(s) on the application are encouraged to upload an unofficial copy of the transcript as an attachment to the application.
