<p>The Public Safety Officer III is responsible to enforce federal and state laws, local ordinances and University rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and to maintain order in an assigned area. Responsible for the detection and prevention of crime and the protection of life and property, providing active crime prevention, safety and security patrols in the community. Good customer service skills and proven oral and written communication skills are essential.</p> <p>Education and Experience</p> <ul> <li>Associate degree from an accredited college or university and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. </li><li>Possess valid driver's license and excellent driving record. </li><li>Must be at least 21 years of age and must be a U.S. Citizen. </li><li>Must be able to successfully complete New York State Bureau of Municipal Police Officer or Campus Public Safety Officer (with firearms) certification (approved through the Municipal Police Training Council pursuant to Education Law §6435). </li><li>Successful completion of Field Training Program. </li><li>Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers, including all Windows-based applications. </li><li>Proficiency in non-English language desirable. </li><li>Experience working with university-based populations preferred. </li><li>Must successfully pass a criminal background check, comprehensive background investigation, drug screening and psychological exam. </li></ul> <p>Skills and Knowledge</p> <ul> <li>Able/willing to work evening/day/afternoon shifts, including weekends and holidays as required. </li><li>Good customer service skills and proven oral/written communication skills. </li><li>Ability to establish/maintain good relationships with the general public, to follow commands from superiors without hesitation and to exercise independent judgment in emergencies; ability to follow written directions. </li><li>Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. </li><li>Three (3) plus years of experience as a campus peace officer or police officer. </li><li>New hire with minimum of thirty (30) college credit hours; existing officer with a minimum of twelve (12) college credit hours earned since hire (other than DPS training); or existing officer with a minimum of thirty (30) college credit hours, or has completed six (6) years of satisfactory service. </li><li>Satisfactory or better performance appraisals for each of the previous three years in DPS. </li><li>Attended all in-service training for previous three years (no unexcused absences) and passed the post in-service training knowledge and performance proficiency exam. </li><li>Successfully completed at least two (2) specialized DPS, professional law enforcement, and/or DCJS training programs. </li></ul> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Responsible for the detection and prevention of crime and the protection of life and property and providing active crime prevention, safety and security patrols in the community. </li><li>Engages in property checks and calls for service, ensuring adequate visibility of Public Safety on campus, and ensuring departmental standards for community policing are met. </li><li>Makes daily reports of activities and writes comprehensive incident and investigation reports and completes all paperwork necessary for proper filing of Student Code of Conduct complaints and/or criminal prosecutions. </li><li>Provides services including: lockouts, escorts for persons and monies, checks doors and windows of unoccupied University buildings, businesses and residential properties. </li><li>Answers questions for and directs the public, receives and investigates complaints from the public. </li><li>Broadcasts and receives radio messages and sends/receives electronic messages. </li><li>Actively engages in innovative problem-solving techniques and procedural justice practices with the community by demonstrating fairness, transparency and impartiality in decision making. </li><li>Demonstrates support of the University and Department of Public Safety mission and vision and engages in respectful and ethical behavior towards others. Embraces diversity and inclusion. </li><li>Under general supervision, performs routine patrol duties on an assigned shift. </li><li>Responds to emergencies, exercising considerable independent judgment. </li><li>Work is reviewed by direct observation/submission of reports. </li><li>Performs advanced community policing, law enforcement tasks and initial patrol investigation tasks. </li><li>Works independently in most instances, requires little direction from a supervisor. </li><li>Leads other officers on scene when supervisors are unavailable. </li><li>Trains/mentors recruits. </li><li>Patrols a specific zone on foot/bicycle/patrol vehicle. Engages in community oriented policing, interacting with students, faculty, staff, visitors and members of the public. </li><li>Responds to and investigates all violations of University rules/regulations, city/county ordinances, state/federal crimes and violations, vehicle accidents, injuries and fires. </li><li>Responds to entry, panic, and fire alarms. </li><li>Conducts interviews and interrogations of victims, suspects, and witnesses. </li><li>Directs traffic/issues parking and traffic tickets as necessary. Maintains order in crowds at events and other public gatherings. </li><li>Investigates suspicious activities, and when necessary, conducts warrantless arrests in accordance with departmental rules/regulations and NYS Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and other state/federal laws. </li><li>Provides emergency medical assistance. </li><li>Conducts crime scene searches for possible suspects. </li><li>Watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons, stolen vehicles and property. </li><li>Collects and preserves evidence including weapons and drugs. </li><li>Escorts suspects to court and/or Justice Center, and has them booked on charges. </li><li>Controls civil disorder. </li><li>Other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Physical Requirements</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Tools/Equipment</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Application Instructions</p> <p>In addition to completing an online application, applicants must submit a cover letter and resume for full consideration.</p> <p>About Syracuse University</p> <p>Syracuse University is a private research university, with over 14,000 full-time undergraduate and over 4,000 full¬time graduate students representing the 50 states and 124 foreign countries.
